What is Communication
• Communication is the imparting or transference of
thoughts, opinions or information by speech, writing or
signs.

Communications skills
• To communicate effectively with others you will need to
have good verbal (spoken) skills, you will need to be an
active listener, have basic writing and reading skills and
also be able to use electronic equipment that is used in
the workplace.
Verbal Skills

• Speak Clearly

• When speaking to someone always speak clearly. The


way you speak to people is very important.
Be an Active Listener
• Listening skills are one of the most important ways of
communicating

Body language and Image


• Our body language demonstrates the true feelings we
have to any given task or situation
Ask Questions
• Understanding your workplace roles and
responsibilities will also assist you with communicating
effectively.
• As a new trainee it is expected that you will not know
everything. There are two basic rules to learning:
• Listen
• Ask questions
Follow Instructions
• It is important that you follow all instructions given to
you in the workplace.
• if you are not sure. It is better to ask a question and
complete the task correctly than to fumble your way
through only to find out at the end.
• Mistakes can be avoided if you have the right
information
• When giving instructions to others, give clear and to the
point instructions. Share as much information and detail
with the person as possible.
ASSESSMENT ACTIVITY 1.1
1. To communicate effectively with others in the workplace
what are the three main skills you require?

• Have good verbal (spoken) skills


• Be an active listener
• Have basic writing and reading skills
2. List three types of body language or gestures and explain
their believed meanings

• Shrug shoulder or slouch when being spoken to – lack of interest


• Tightly Crossed arms – defensive position
• Lack of eye contact – dishonesty clenched fist - aggression
• (No set answers)
3. Explain why the image you portray in the
workplace is important?
• A good self-image demonstrates to others that you care about
yourself and the way you act. You have self-respect

4. What should you do in the workplace if you do


not clearly understand what is being asked of you?
• Ask questions
