Brake Information VTEC Montrose Scotland

The Brake on the top end of the Top Drive drilling motor armature shaft is a static or parking brake.
It is not a running or dynamic brake. It is not intended to nor is it capable of slip-releasing the wind
up of torque in the drill string

Using the brake to slip-release the drill string wind up torque causes the brake to heat up and can
destroy the brake lining.

When down hole torque is being held by the TDS motor brake ,Varco recommends the following procedure
to safely release the torque in the drill string.

Use the hand throttle to develop motor to equal to the wind up of the torque being held by the
parking brake, adjust the current limit potentiometer so as it is above the or equal to the wind up
torque then release the parking brake. Start to back off the current limit potentiometer and the throttle
so that as the motor torque is reduced, the drill string slowly unwinds to release the wind up torque.
Once the torque is unwound the hand throttle and drill current potentiometer should be turned off
re-set to normal operating position.

NOTE :- DO NOT LEAVE THE TOP DRIVE DC MOTOR STALLED IN A HIGH TORQUE CONDITION FOR
MORE THAN 10 SECONDS

that weight of assembly is 34KG
(TDS 3 / 5) OR 50KG (TDS 4).
Then cover pinion with fire blanket.

12. Heat pinion gear to 375 to 400

degree F (190 to 205 degree C) in

remove it from Pinion.
Replace Fire Blanket to Prevent Personnel
Coming in Contact with the Pinion.

(As cooling occurs you may hear some noise,

this is normal).

15. The pinion will tend to creep up the shaft to the

required position of 0.085 +0.005 inches advancement.
When pinion is fully cooled , check advancement as
follows: Loosen locknut on fixture and turn adjusting
screw until gauge reads more than the required
advancement. Fit fixture and turn adjusting screw until it
butts against motor shaft. Observe advancement reading
on dial indicator.

NOTE:
If advancement is out of specification pinion will
require to be removed and procedure repeated.

Refit Plug in the End of the Motor Shaft.
