Understanding Current Electricity Basics

Current electricity is the flow of electrons through conductors, typically metals, forming circuits that connect a source to a load, such as a light bulb. Circuit diagrams are used to represent complex circuits, and students are challenged to build specific circuits with light bulbs and switches. Wiring symbols for components like switches, cells, and resistors are to be copied from the textbook.

Current Electricity

Electricity formed by the flow of

electrons.
Electrons flow through conductors
• Metals make good conductors.
• We use these to make paths for electrons to
flow. These paths are called circuits.
In this circuit…
• electrons flow from a source, through
conductors, to a load (the light bulb).
• A load can be anything that uses electricity.
In this circuit…
• electrons flow can be controlled through a
switch.
In this circuit…
• electrons flow can be controlled through a
switch.
Circuits can become very complex.
So we use circuit diagrams to
represent parts of a circuit.
Please turn to Page 545 in your text
and copy the wiring symbols for…
• a switch a) open b) closed
• a cell
• a 2 cell battery
• a conductor
• a lamp
• a resistor
Challenge
1) Build a circuit where the switch is closed and
2 light bulbs lights up.

2) Build a circuit where the switch is closed and

a light bulb goes out.
