EXERCISE #1
Do a quick Design of your DREAM HOUSE
(DRAW, ILLUSTRATE and WRITE your ideas on paper for 30
mins)
*This exercise is an assessment of the student’s present
level of skill and knowledge on the subjects of
Architecture.
*Their works will set the phasing of the learning process
and indicate areas that needs more attention.
HOMEWORK #1
1. Research on the Meaning of “Architectural Design”
and related subjects (Design, History, Vistech,
Graphics)
(Ref: DK Ching Books – Visual Dictionary)
2. Look for samples of Architectural Design

DESIGN PROCESS
Architectural design is an important phase of
every project because it focuses heavily on
the functionality and aestheticism of
your project. Every design detail will make a
difference in the day-to-day life of those who
will be utilizing the space.
HOW TO DESIGN???
1st – Know the Basics Skills needed to Design
(SPEED)
2nd – Learn HOW to Communicate your Design
(ACCURACY)
3rd – Understand the Design Process
(COMPREHENSION)
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO LEARN?
AR110 – INTRODUCTION TO ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
Design fundamentals involving basic creative design
exercises with emphasis on space, form and mass
AR111 - ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTING
The study of visual communication, typography,
alphabet of lines and their applications and the use
and care of instruments, geometric construction, use
of scale, mensuration and dimensioning. Emphasis is given
to the study of the theory of projection with analysis of
the relationship between points, lines and planes in
space. Includes exercises on surface development and
graphic presentation.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO LEARN?
AR112 – MONOCHROMATIC FREEHAND DRAWING
The study of visualization and graphic presentation in
the form of freehand drawings including still-life and
architectural forms and entourage using different
media, in black and white/monochrome.
AR113 - DESIGN THEORIES IN ORGANIZING FORM & SPACE
Design theories with emphasis on perceptual and
proxemic sensitivities in organizing forms and space.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO LEARN?
*the key to this lecture is to emphasize the importance of the
design process and it’s related subjects, skills req’d and how
will this all produce a good design when combined together
You may give practical examples of famous architectural
works or architects applying the design process
EXERCISE #2
GROUP WORK:
What makes a GOOD DESIGN of a HOUSE?
Present by group your work (sketch, Illustrating, Write-up)
- PLAN (arrangement of space) site is optional
- SHAPE (form) one storey/floor only
- CONCEPT (idea)how did you come up with your design???
*basic sketch or illustration, simple explanation based on your
present knowledge only, you may GOOGLE your solutions but know
how to explain your process… HOW and WHY?
EXERCISE #2
GROUP WORK:
*This exercise is an assessment of the student’s present
level of skill and knowledge on the DESIGN PROCESS.
*This Exercise will also introduce the students in the PROCESS of
an Architectural Design, making them aware of the complexity of
the subject and the required skills/knowledge needed to master
“DESIGN 1” *to create realistic awareness for the students. (still
will either inspire them or quit early) :D
HOMEWORK #2
ESSAY
1. What do you want to learn from all subjects on your
first year of Architecture?
2. Why do you want to be an Architect?
3. Research on Famous Architects (local or international,
living or deceased) and the Houses they designed.
HOMEWORK #2
* The GOAL is this HW is to instill the right mindset in
our students which is establishing the eagerness to
learn. Also creating a deeper “purpose” early in their
careers. This will also help them have role models
thru their “Architect Idols” and reference styles in
Design.

WHAT IS A CONCEPT
LATIN – conceptum
Meaning “something conceive”
created by the human mind (until AI came)
Manifestation of an original idea
*Reference book page found in Google Drive
CONCEPT in ARCHITECTURE
“Misused”
Concept
Architects – dreams of grand and
underdeveloped ideas not realized
Conceptual Architecture – not built, intended
only to stir up reaction
Concept Stage – a sketch of a project
SPECIFIC vs UNIVERSAL
SPECIFIC – unique condition, use of building,
needs of user, site opportunities, topography,
political, social.
UNIVERSAL – standards, timeless solutions,
rules, measurements, scale and proportion,
beauty of character. The truth and integrity of
the project.
BUILT REALITY
“Architects should not only conceptualize but
also build their ideas and design”
Building is a physical manifestation of the
original concept.
We must always have a reason to BUILD.
Specific and Universal
Concepts are always
part of the Design
Solution
OTHERWISE, IT IS JUST A HOUSE OR A BUILDING
EXERCISE #3
GROUP WORK:
*ESSAY WRITING
EXERCISE #3
GROUP WORK:
*This exercise is give students a first hand experience on
how to write an essay about your design concept
*This Exercise will give them awareness on the complexity of the
process of using a design concept reference to design a house
*

DESIGN VISUALIZATION
COMMUNICATING your DESIGN
In Architecture, we develop a different kind of
communication. It is expressed through our
drawings. That is why we study visual
techniques that would aid us in relaying our
ideas from our thoughts to paper and
eventually sending this communications as
presentations.

DESIGN PROBLEM
PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:
Every Design Problem has a requirement. It is
usually a USER requirement for SPACE. So get
to know your Client and their Spatial Needs.
DESIGN PROBLEM
The USER is someone we may refer to as the
Client or people who will be using the project
or the space. By getting to know your Client’s
specific requirements, you will be able to
translate it into SPACE Programming.
DESIGN PROBLEM
Space Program
Isa Table format List of SPACES required, their
dimensions (length and width) usually based
on the furniture, fixture or appliance found
within, their description or activity intended for
and the location.
SPACE PROGRAM
LIST
ALL REQUIREMENTS AND THINGS
NEEDED TO BE RESEARCHED
LIVING SPACE
In a Filipino Family, it a place where we
converge to spend time with our loved ones
or entertain our guests
Thiscan have a comfortable seating area with
some entertainment appliances or electronic
devices
Itcan be well lighted or adjusted according to
the mood
LIVING SPACE
Itis adjacent to the dining area and foyer or
porch.
It
may have an adjacent terrace if the user
wants to extend its activity outdoors
Itcan also be adjacent to a powder room or a
separate family room or study room
DINING SPACE
Ina Filipino Family, it a place not just for
eating but also for bonding
Thiscan have a dining table and chair
depending on the number of family members
Itcan have a cabinet or a shelves for storage
of chinaware and utensils
DINING SPACE
Itcan also serve as a family activity area such
as studying, working or get together.
Itmay or may not have TV or entertainment
system depending on the family’s preference
Itis adjacent to the kitchen and living space
usually located in between
