Objectives:
* Introduce the concepts of the basic mathematical concepts related to electromagnetic vector fields
* Impart knowledge on the concepts of Electrostatic fields, electrical potential, energy density and their
applications.
* Impart knowledge on the concepts of Magneto static fields, magnetic flux density, vector potential and its
applications.
* Impart knowledge on the concepts of Different methods of emf generation and Maxwell’s equations
* Impart knowledge on the concepts of Electromagnetic waves and characterizing parameters

• Unit I- ELECTROSTATICS – I 9Hrs
Electromagnetic spectrum - Sources and effects of electromagnetic fields –
CoordinateSystems: Cartesian, Cylindrical and Spherical system–
Transformations of Vector fields - Gradient, Divergence, Curl –Divergence and
stokes theorems and its applications –Coulomb’s Law – Electric field intensity –
Field due to discrete and continuous charges(line, circular ring, infinite sheet of
charge) – Gauss’s law and applications. Simple matlab programs for vector field
mathematical operations

Unit II- ELECTROSTATICS – II 9Hrs
Electric potential, potential due to circular coil –Electric dipole, Electric field
andequipotential plots, Uniform and Non-Uniform field,Utilization factor –
Electric field in freespace, conductors, dielectrics – Dielectric polarization –
Dielectric strength – Electric field inmultiple dielectrics – Boundary
conditions, Poisson’s and Laplace’s equations, Capacitance,Energy density,
Applications.

Unit III- MAGNETOSTATICS 9Hrs
Lorentz force, magnetic field intensity (H) – Biot–Savart’s Law –
Ampere’s Circuit Law – Hdue to straight conductors, circular loop,
infinite sheet of current, Magnetic flux density (B) –B in free space,
conductor, magnetic materials – Magnetization, Magnetic field in
multiple media – Boundary conditions, scalar and vector potential,
Poisson’s Equation, Inductance, Energy density, Applications.

Unit IV- ELECTRODYNAMIC FIELDS 9Hrs
Magnetic Circuits – Faraday’s law – Transformer and motional EMF –
Displacement current–Maxwell’s equations (differential and integral
form) – Magnetic force, Torque – Relationbetween field theory and
circuit theory – Applications.

Unit V- ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES 9Hrs
Electromagnetic wave generation and equations – Wave parameters:
velocity, intrinsic impedance, propagation constant, attenuation constant
and Phase constant- Waves in free space, conductor, lossy and lossless
dielectrics, conductors- skin depth – Poynting vector and Poynting
theorem– Plane wave reflection and refraction- Brewsters angle.

Outcomes:
* CO1 Recall the basic mathematical concepts of coordinate systems, gradient, divergence, curl and theorems
related to electromagnetic vector fields and Coulomb’s Law, Gauss’s law and its applications
* CO2 Explain the concepts of Electrostatics and their applications, Boundary condition capacitance, and to derive
energy density and Poisson’s and Laplace’s equations
* CO3 Explain the concepts of magneto statics and their applications, Boundary condition, Inductance and to
derive Energy density, scalar and vector potential
* CO4 Describe the concepts of Maxwell’s equations and compare relation between field theory and circuit theory.
* CO5 Describe the concepts of wave equation for free space, lossy and lossless dielectrics, conductors and their
parameters and Pointing vector.
