Speed Log Sensor Overview for Ships

The document outlines the requirement for a speed log on passenger ships and vessels over 300 gross tonnage, as mandated by SOLAS Chapter V Regulation 19. It describes the SPEED LOG SENSOR model used on the Carnival Sunrise, which employs the Doppler Effect to measure speed through water in two axes. The system provides continuous navigation details and outputs various data including speed, direction, temperature, and alarms.

SPEED LOG SENSOR

Vincenzo Marano
Requirement for speed log
A speed log is required on all passenger ships
irrespective of size and on all ships of 300 gross
tonnage and upwards. A speed and distance measuring
device which indicates speed and distance through
water is required by SOLAS Chapter V Regulation 19.

On board the carnival

Sunrise we have this speed
log model SPEED LOG SENSOR
MODEL 2-AXIS DOPPLER SPEED LOG
(270 KHZ)
SAM 4682/4683 V3
SYSTEM OVERVIEW
THE SYSTEM IS A NAVIGATION, 2 AXIS (TRANSVERSAL AND
LONGITUDINAL). THE DISPLAY GRAPHICS IS CONTINUOUSLY SHOWN ON
THE LCD ALONG WITH AVAILABLE NAVIGATION DETAILS, INCLUDING
THE IMPUT AND OUTPUT. ALL IMO INTERNATIONAL MARITIME
ORGANIZATION REQUIREMENTS FOR SPEED LOG.
The Doppler speed log measures ship's speed by
using the Doppler Effect, which is observed as a
frequency shift resulting from relative motion
between a transmitter and receiver or reflector of
acoustic or electro-magnetic energy.

Brown : (BT) is speed over

ground.
Blue: (WT) is speed through
water.
Drift Angle is the angle between
the longitudinal axis and
resultant speed vector.
In deep water scenarios, the STW of a vessel is determined by
the Doppler Log. The Doppler log measures the STW by emitting
a signal at a known frequency from the bottom of the vessel,
which reflects off the sea bed and detected by the device at the
new frequency.

SENSOR (TRANSDUCER)
THE DOPPLER SENSOR CONSISTS OF A HEAD WITH 3 HYDRO-ACOUSTIC ELEMENTS. THE
ELEMENTS ARE TRASMITTING AND RECEIVING ACOUSTIC SIGNALS AT 270KHZ. OUT OF
THE RECEIVED DOPPLER SHIFTED FREQUENCIES IT IS POSSIBLE TO CALCULATE THE SPEED
IN 2 AXIS. THE SENSOR IS CONNECTED TO A TRANSCEIVER CABINET LOCATED WITHIN
40M OF THE SENSOR.
The speed log is a device used to measure the speed
of a moving vessel. Unit used for expressing the
speed of a vessel is knots (Nautical miles/hour). The
Speed log are used on vessels to record the speed
and also the number of nautical miles the vessel has
travelled through the water in a given time.
Outputs
- 3 log pulse outputs
10/100/200/400/1000 pulses
per nautical mile
- 2 outputs also given speed
direction and temperature,
alarm & depth information,
and speed limit alarm.
Water relative speed is measured at a
depth of 0.3 – 16 meters below
transducer, depending on setting and
depth. The water track can be fixed to
always measure 0.3 – 3 meters, water
track detected in depths less than 2
meters.
