INTRODUCTION
• Seminar is a common form of discussion employed in teaching
nursing .
• Seminars are used usually used for teaching higher level students like
postgraduates ,research scholars etc .
• Seminar is type of group discussion where it focuses on problem
solving approach .
• A group of 10-20 students take part in seminar.
• The whole seminar lasts for 1-2 hours and the time allowed for paper
presentation is about 15-20 minutes
DEFINITION
• Seminar is a discussion based on information presented by
experts under the guidance of an eminent resource person for
the benefit of group members.
• Seminar is an instructional technique of higher learning which
involves paper reading on a theme and followed by group
discussion to clarify the complex aspects of theme.
OBJECTIVES
• Help students express their ideas.
• Discussion should on interesting topic .
• Set limit for each person to contribute.
• Plan for teacher and student self evaluation of achievement of
objectives.
• To develop the emotional ability among the participants of the seminar .
• To acquire the good manners of putting question and answering the question of
others effectively.
PURPOSES OF SEMINAR
•To promote the independent learning.
•To get students involved in discussions.
•To get students listen to one another.
•To provide an opportunity for arguments.
•To promote critical engagement with areas of
uncertainly in sociology
PRINCIPLES
• Seminars operate simultaneously on intellectual , affective and social levels.
• Seminars are not simply about learning in a given subject discipline but they are
also about learning to learn.
• All the participants bear some share of responsibility for the success of the
individual session or the programmer as a whole .
• The tutor/leader has a particular responsibility to:
Structure the seminar in such a way as to enable participation.
Maintain the group’s working environment
Establish ground rules about participation and preparation.
TYPES OF SEMINAR
[Link] SEMINAR :- A Seminar conducted in the classroom . In
classroom seminar one student presents a particular topic or problem
and the group will conduct a detailed discussion based on the
presentation under guidance of the teacher.

institutional level.

REQUIREMENT OF SEMINAR
• Teacher is a leader.
• 10-15 members are participants.
• The topic is presented by the students taking 15-20 minutes time.
• Duration is 1-2 hours.
• Leader should keep the discussion within the limits of problem.
• Students present their data in informal way under the leadership of
teacher.
• All the member take part in discussion in an informal way but orderly in
manner
RULES FOR CONDUCTING
SEMINAR
• Define the purpose of the discussion .
• Relate the topic of discussion to the main concept or the objectives
to be achieved.
• Focus the discussion on the topic.
• Help students express their ideas.
• Discussion should on interesting topic .
• Set limit for each person to contribute.
• Plan for teacher and student self evaluation of achievement of
objectives.
FUNCTION OF TEACHER IN SEMINAR
• Selecting the topic.
• Remaining in the background at the seminar , but sitting where she/he
can see whole group.
• Being prepared to help out in the initial stages of seminar.
• Confirm that all essential points are covered.
• Make sure that irrelevant discussion is avoided.

A. Responsibility of an organizer is to plan and
prepare the whole program of seminar.
B. To decide the theme.
C. Assign the parts of theme to different person .
D. He decides that who will be speaker .
E. Decides date ,time and place.
F. Prepare total schedule.
ROLE OF CHAIRMAN
• Direct the whole program and keeps the discussion
on the theme of seminar.
• At the end ,summarizes the discussion and present his
view point on theme.
• Give thanks to speaker, participants and observers.
ROLE OF SPEAKERS
The success of the seminar depends on how well the discussion
session is utilized by participants.
• The quality and quantity of the information presented by the
speakers have direct role in preparing the participants for
discussion session.
• The speaker should be ready to define the questions.
• Speakers are expected to present relevant information in an
interesting manner .
ROLE OF PARTICIPANTS
• Participants have to prepare themselves well in advance .
• They should appreciate the performance of the speaker.
• There are 25-30 participants seminar.
• They should be able to put questions and seek clarification.
ROLE OF OBSERVER
• They are limited to observe activities.
• They are not permitted to participate in discussion .
• They should be allowed at the end of discussion and present their
observations by permission of chairperson.
SEMINAR TECHINQUE
• Organizers make necessary arrangements for the seminar and distribute
material to participants one or two hours before the seminar
• Seminar begins with an introductory speech by the chairperson.
• Questions and clarifications should be addressed to the chairperson
instead of addressing directly to the speaker.
• Chairperson then invites the concerned speaker to give the reply.
• Observers observe the activity of seminar.
ADVANTAGES OF SEMINAR
• Gives assumption that students have background knowledge.
• Group and individual students try to solve problem.
• All doubts can be cleared.
• Gives training in self-learning and promote independent thinking.
• Students develop skills in problem solving.
• Openness of ideas
• Natural ways of learning
• Represents the norms of behaviours.
• Cooperation with other develop.
DISADVANTAGES OF SEMINAR
• Time consuming
• Cannot be applied to new students.
• Nervous students cannot improve.
• If subject knowledge is poor, pointless debate arises
• Seminar cannot be organized on all the content of subject matter.
• Technique cannot be used in all levels of education.
LIMITATIONS
• Seminar cannot be organized on any content of subject matter ,theme
should be held.
• Technique cannot be used in all levels of education .
• Possibility of formation of two ideas.
• If two groups exist ,they may try to appose ideas of other group.
CONCLUSION
• Seminar is a method of teaching mostly used for higher
education . It is an instructional technique which includes the
group discussion to clarify the complex aspect of theme . The
student learns to develop the ability of keen observation of
experience and feelings of tolerance to the opposite ideas of
others.
