Give some ways on what to do
before, during and after an
earthquake and volcanic
eruption.
Fact or Bluff
Let’s identify your prior knowledge about the weather and climate in the
Philippines by answering this activity. Say FACT if the statement is true and
BLUFF if false.
1. The two distinct seasons in the Philippines are the wet and dry.
2. Weather changes from time to time.
3. The type of climate in the Philippines is based on the rainfall
received by a particular lace.
4. ITCZ is a region near the equator where the northern and the
southern hemisphere winds meet.
5. The Philippines consists of 7, 801 islands.
The Philippines is located near the equator. It lies 5 and 20 degrees
north of the equator. The Philippines is an archipelago with 7,107
islands. It is made up of islands of different sizes and features.
Some are very small while others are large. Mountain ranges,
valleys, hills, bodies of water and other landforms are found in the
different islands comprising the Philippines. These geographical
and physical conditions of the Philippines affect its climate.
Read the weather forecast given by PAGASA and answer the
questions that follow. Write the answer in your notebook.
1. What weather system prevails in Luzon
and Visayas o February 23, 2014?
2. Describe the weather in Bicol Region.
Cagayan Region, Aurora, Palawan and
Visayas on February 23, m 14.
3. Describe the weather in Metro Manila
and the rest of Luzon.
4. What is the weather in Mindanao?
5. Where are you right now? Describe the
weather in your
place on as reported in the weather
bulletin from PAGASA.
Weather is the condition of the atmosphere in a
particular place at a particular time. It affects
your day-to-day activities and determines what
activities you will do for the next day.
Weather changes from time to time. In the weather forecast
given in your Activity #2, you will note that the weather in Metro
Manila and the rest of Luzon was partly cloudy with isolated light
rains. This means that in the morning, the weather in these
places was not the same in the afternoon. Repeating weather
condition over a period of time is called a weather pattern. The
average weather pattern in a certain area over a long period of
time is the area's climate.
The weather forecast is a statement of the expected
weather conditions in a given place over a period of
from one hour in a few days advance. It is determined
by scientists by studying the weather through different
instruments. The study of weather is called meteorology
and the scientists who study about the weather are
called meteorologists. They are commonly called
weathermen. They describe the weather as "bright and
sunny" or "Cloudy" or "cool and dry" or "warm and
humid" or rainy" or
"stormy".
Weather forecast is based from the analysis of the
different element gathered Through the different
weather instruments. In the Philippines, the agency
in-charge of the releasing the weather forecast is
Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical
Service Administration (PAGASA).
It is in charge of observing, recording and studying
the weather. PAGASA coordinates with the World
Meteorological Organization (WMO) in forecasting the
weather.

Study the table below and answer the questions that
follow.
1. What month has the highest temperature?
2. In what month has the least amount of rainfall?
3. When does Metro Manila experience 100 mm
rain and below?
4. What is the prevailing season in Metro Manila
from December to May?
5. Based on the graph what is the season from
June to October?
In today’s discussion, we will
identify the different elements
of weather and the difference
between southwest and
northeast monsoon.
Elements of Weather
Temperature - is the hotness or coldness of the air
around us. It waves according to the elevation, location of
the place and time of the day. The higher the elevation,
the lower the temperature. It also differs according to the
latitude or location of place in the globe. Places near the
equator receive the direct rays of the sun that is why they
experience high temperatures. Scientists use the
thermometer to measure temperature.
Air Pressure - is the amount of force
exerted by air on Earth’s surface. It can
vary from one place to another. The
temperature of the place, water vapor, in
the atmosphere and the elevation affect
the density of the air. Barometer is used to
measure air pressure.
Humidity - is a measure of moisture present
in the air. It may vary from place to place. It is
affected by temperature. An indication that
humidity is high is when our body feels warm
and sticky. Psychrometer and hygrometer are
used to measure relative humidity. Clouds –
are tiny droplets of water or ice crystals up in
the atmosphere. They are formed as warm air
rises and cools.
Precipitation – is usually formed when clouds
reach the thickness of more than 1 kilometer.
Rain is a liquid precipitation while hail or sleet is
a solid precipitation.
Wind – is moving air. It is caused by the
unequal heating of the Earth’s surface. Near
earth
surface, wind speed near the ground has an
average range from 8 to 24 km/hr. Wind velocity
can be measured using an anemometer.
Southwest Monsoon
Blows from the West Philippine Sea
into the heated continental interior.
It is locally known as Habagat. It
comes from the southwest direction
that brings heavy rain throughout
the country from June-November.
Northeast Monsoon
Northeast Monsoon or Amihan carries cool
and dry winds that bring slight to moderate
rain over the eastern coasts of the
Philippines. It brings cool dry air from
December to February and trade winds
prevails over the country from March to April
bringing much
heat.
Study the data below and answer the questions that follow.
Write your answer in your notebook.
1. In what months do Cebu, Naga and Zamboanga,
experience the heaviest rainfall?
2. In what months does Cebu experience less rain (below
100
cu. mm)?

(above [Link])
Cebu:

Checking of Assignment
For today’s lesson, let’s learn the
different seasons that we have in
our country.
Below are words that describe the seasons in the Philippines. Choose the words
that describe dry and wet season and write them on their respective boxes.
The Philippines has two seasons,
namely: wet or rainy season and the
dry season. The of these seasons
varies in different places in the
country. It has two distinct seasons
only because of its location.
Wet season or rainy season
is characterized by heavy rainfall
throughout the country which usually
comes from May to December but the
heaviest downpour in most areas is from
July to October. The southwest monsoon or
Habagat blowing from the ocean brings the
rain. When northeast monsoon or amihan
blows, it also brings rainfall in the eastern
part of the country.
Locally known as tag-ulan this season is
usually the planting time in areas where
there is no irrigation.
During dry season, Filipinos
experience very hot temperature. In
some places of the country people
experience this season from January
to early of May. In other places, there
is short dry season, usually from
March to May only. When summer
comes in the northern hemisphere
most places in the Philippines have
dry season. Locally known as tag-init
or tagtuyot, this season is the time
for farmers to harvest and dry their
crops under the sun.
