TOPIC 1: IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY
Technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes,
especially in industry. It usually leads to development of machines or
specialized equipment that make our life easier.
S A M P L E T E X T 4
POSITIVE IMPACTS OF TECHNOLOGY
• Technology has increased productivity and
economic growth.
• Medical innovations have improved life
expectancy and reduced child mortality.
• Agricultural technologies have increased crop
yields and reduced undernourishment.
• Access to energy, electricity, sanitation, and
clean water has improved the lives of billions
of people.
• The internet, telephones, and transport have
allowed people to collaborate on global
problems.
• New modes of education have reached people
who would otherwise have no access to
schooling. S A M P L E T E X T 5
NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF
TECHNOLOGY
• However, technology can also have
negative impacts, such
as: Threatening privacy, Eroding
security, Fuelling inequality, and
Causing environmental hazards.
• To mitigate the negative impacts of
technology, governments,
businesses, and individuals need to
work together to create an
inclusive digital world that respects
privacy and promotes sustainability 6
TOPIC 2: SOCIAL MEDIA
AND ITS IMPACT
Social media are interactive technologies that facilitate the creation, sharing
and aggregation of content and information (such as ideas, interests, and
other forms of expression) amongst virtual communities and networks.
S A M P L E T E X T 8
POSITIVE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA
Social media off ers us greater convenience and
connectivity. It allows us to:
stay connected with family and friends
worldwide via email, text, FaceTime, etc.
have quick access to information and
research
learn online, acquire job skills and discover
content. (YouTube)
involve in civic engagement (fundraising,
social awareness, provides a voice)
use great marketing tools
• fi nd opportunities for remote employment

NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF SOCIAL
MEDIA
Social media has many negative eff ects.
Stuff shown on social media can be very
diff erent from real life. It is also very
addictive. Posting pictures on Instagram
and seeing all those likes triggers the
reward system and you crave for more
online time. Over-exposure can lead to
anxiety, depression and exposure to
inappropriate content. It also brings in a
FOMO (fear of missing out), that if you
do not stay online every day, you will
miss out on something.

TOPIC 3- GLOBAL ACCESS
TO TECHNOLOGY
Access to technology around the world is uneven, with a significant gap
between those who have access and those who do not. This gap is called
the digital divide, and it can have negative consequences for economic,
political, and social inclusion and equality
S A M P L E T E X T 12
GLOBAL ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY
• The global access to technology is
very uneven. There is a simple trend
over here, the countries with money,
have better quaternary industries
which are key for R&D, technological
developments etc. Overall the rich
countries have better access to
technology, and are constantly
inventing new technologies, and
developing countries constantly play
catch-up. This trend is visible in all
S A M P L E T E X T 13
EFFECTS OF DIGITAL DIVIDE
• The digital divide is a very unpleasant thing,
especially for developing countries, as they have
to catch up to developed countries whilst
developing key public services such as
healthcare, education and strengthening their
economic base (primary and secondary
industries). This puts a lot of strain on them,
exaggerated by low and unreliable source of
income. They have to take on large amounts of
debt and buy machines from developed countries
at a high price, providing the developed
countries with more funs for innovation,
continuing this cycle.

Summary
Overall, technology has improved our lives a lot, and our
lives are unimaginable without technology. It has showed
improvements in many sectors such as healthcare,
agriculture, industry and education and has formed a
fi rm base. However, hacking and software crashes can
disrupt the whole system and causes billions of dollars in
losses.
Social media has infl uenced the world, allowing people to
create content and share research in captivating ways. It
has many other uses, such as marketing, data collection
etc. FOMO and addiction have also made it a bad place
and parents try to protect their children from this.
The digital divide has caused a vicious cycle for
developing countries. They have to take on debt and buy
machines, whilst building the economic base, trapping
15
them and slowing growth.
