The Erythrocyte Segmentation Rate (ESR) test measures how quickly red blood cells settle in a test tube, indicating inflammation in the body. Normal ESR ranges are 0-9 mm/hr for males and 0-20 mm/hr for females, with elevated levels potentially signaling various health issues. Maintaining a normal ESR can be achieved through hydration, exercise, stress management, and a healthy diet.

INTRODUCTION
Erythrocyte are red blood cells.Segmentation rate is the times it takes for your red blood cells
to settle at the bottom of test tube.
An erythrocyte segmentation rate test is a blood test that can show if you have inflammation
in your body.
Inflammation is your immune system response to injury, infection and may other
conditions, including immune system disorder, certain cancer and blood disorders. (study.com)
ESR TEST RESULT:
normal range for ESR is:
for male,0-9mm/1hr
for female,0-20mm/1hr
NOTE:
A high ESR test result means you red blood cells sank faster than normal. This may form
conditions that may cause inflammation.such as:
•kidney disorder, Infections(bone infection, body wide infection), Heart disease and certain
disorder.
A high ESR doesn’t always means you have serious disease.Other factors like age, pregnancy
and menstruation can also slightly elevate it. A low ESR test result means your red blood cells
sank slower than normal. This may be caused by conditions such as: Polycythemia (increase in
your RBCs), Sickle cell anemia (genetic disease affecting RBCs) leukocytosis (increase in
your(WBCs).
A low ESR test result may be due to cognitive heart failure (CHF) hypofibrinogemia, which
is too little fibrogen in the blood in relation to liver or kidney. (medicalnewstoday.com)
WAYS OF MAINTAINING NORMAL ESR
•Stay hydrated
•Regular exercise
•Stress management
•Eliminate food that cause inflammatin(sugar,fried food,red meat,sweetened
beverage,margarine,bread)
•Good sleep (at least 7-9 hours each night)
•Alcoholic beverage
•No smoking
•Regular ESR blood test

MATERIALS USED FOR ESR TEST:

wetsrerngren pipette with tube,EDTA container,syringe,cotton wool,stop
watch.
Materials for ESR test

PROCEDURES:
•Collect blood sample from the
patient
•Transfer the blood into ESR
westerngren tube and put the
westerngren pipette inside
the tube
•Allow it to settle for about 1hr
•Measure how quickly the blood settle to the bottom
of the tube.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKING DURING ESR

TEST:
•Remain relaxed and still diring the test
•Sit or lie down comfortably,as instructed by the
healthcare professional
•A tourniquet may be applied to the upper arm to
