Lesson Outline
• Concerns in promoting a safe and healthy workplace
WORKPLACE ERGONOMICS
• the science of designing the workplace, keeping
in mind the capabilities and limitations of the
worker

The basic concept is to provide methods, processes, and

designs to promote the healthy well-being of humans
and to maximize the overall potentials of the workspace,
equipment and furniture.
Two major concerns in promoting a safe and
healthy workplace:
PSYCHOLOGICAL &
PSYCHOSOCIAL PHYSICAL

BOREDOM BIOLOGICAL HAZARDS

CHEMICAL HAZARDS
VIOLENCE
PHYSICAL HAZARDS
SEXUAL
SAFETY HAZARDS
HARASSMENT
ERGONOMIC HAZARDS
STRESS
BIOLOGICAL HAZARDS

• Biological hazards are disease-producing agents (pathogens) that can

be transmitted to individuals through various routes of exposure.

Examples:
• viruses, such as Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Japanese encephalitis.
• toxins from biological sources.
• spores.
• fungi.
• pathogenic micro-organisms.
• bio-active substances.
CHEMICAL HAZARDS

• Refer to any chemicals including medications, solutions, gases, vapors,

aerosols, and particulate matter that are potentially toxic or irritating to
the body system.
Examples:
• paints
• drugs
• cosmetics
• cleaning chemicals
• detergents
• gas cylinders
PHYSICAL HAZARDS

• Physical hazards are based on the intrinsic properties

of the chemical.
• There are five main classes of physical hazards namely
Explosive, Flammable, Oxidising, Gases under
Pressure, and Corrosive to metals.
SAFETY HAZARDS

• Safety hazards are unsafe working conditions that can

cause injury, illness, and death.
Examples:
1. Falls and Falling Objects
2. Chemical Exposure
3. Fire Hazards
4. Electrical Hazards
5. Repetitive Motion Injury
ERGONOMIC HAZARDS

• physical factors in the environment that may cause

musculoskeletal injuries
Examples:
repetition, awkward posture, forceful motion, stationary
position, direct pressure, vibration, extreme
temperature, noise, and work stress.
RISK ASSESSMENT
is a methodical, well-
planned, and systematic
process in establishing
the identification of
hazards and evaluating
their interrelationship
with the risk within the
workplace
Hazard vs. Risk
HAZARD RISK

Anything that can cause Possibility that a hazard

potential harm can cause harm in terms
of loss or injury

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

• the act of performing

regularly scheduled

help prevent unexpected
failures in the future
SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE

• refers to maintenance
tasks that are assigned to
a technician with a given
deadline
EMERGENCY MAINTENANCE
• Maintenance required
when an asset or piece of
equipment suffers an
unexpected breakdown or
change in condition that
results in an immediate
threat to health and safety

Going to LRC …..
• Borrow the book Ergonomics and Facilities
Planning for the Hospitality Industry from the
library and do some advanced reading and
writing on Chapter 4: Repetitive Task, Task
Design, and Risk Assessment and Chapter 5: Job
Demands, Health and Well-being.
• PREPARE FOR A RECITATION NEXT
MEETING 
