Problem solving and reasoning answers

Use digits 1 and 2 only. How many 4-digit numbers can you create? 16
1111 (1: with four 1s).
2111, 1211, 1121, 1112 (4: with three 1s and one 2).
2211, 2121, 2112, 1221, 1212, 1122. (6: with two 1s and two 2s).
2221, 2212, 2122, 1222 (4: with three 2s and one 1).
2222 (1 with four 2s). How logically and systematically do children set about this task?

Write the missing digits in this sequence of numbers:

4865 4875 4885 4895 4905

True or false?
If you start with a 4-digit number and subtract 10 nine times, you will always have to change the
hundreds digit. Give a reason for your opinion.
This is false. Effectively 90 is subtracted so if the starting number is in the 90s the hundreds will not
change. e.g. starting with 5697, subtracting 90 gives 5607. However, starting in any other decade will lead
to a change of 100s, so some children may give examples where the 100 changes and believe the
statement to be true
