Eye Banking, Prosthesis & Rehabilitation

The document discusses eye banking, detailing its role in collecting and distributing donor corneas, as well as the types of corneal harvesting methods. It outlines the steps involved in ocular prosthesis implantation and various approaches to visual rehabilitation, including physical, occupational, chemical, psychological, neurosurgical, genetic, and mobility training. & REHABILITATION

EYE BANK
Eye bank is an institution responsible for
collecting, preserving and distributing the
donor corneas to the recipient regulated by
standard norms
TYPES OF CORNEAL HARVESTING
 Enucleation
 Corneal excision
PARTS OF PROSTHESIS
 Oval white part
 Round centre black part
STEPS IN OCULAR PROSTHESES
IMPLANTATION
 After enucleation/evisceration of the injured
eye, the orbit is left to heal with antibiotic
eye drops
 Ocular implant is embedded deeper in the

eye orbit
 Prosthetic eye is made like a shell and fixed

into the socket

 The ocular implant is wrapped with living

tissue or cushioning synthetic material before

placement
 Prosthetic eye moves, but no vision is

possible
VISUAL REHABILITATION
 Visual rehabilitation is the medical treatment
process of restoring the vision and increasing
the functional and life quality of visually
impaired
TYPES OF REHABILITATION
 Physical approach-video magnifiers, prism
eye glasses used to improve vision.
Transcranial direct current stimulation, radio
frequency identification (RFID), closed circuit
television, smart wheel chairs, sound
systems can be used to adapt to living with
visual impairment
TYPES OF REHABILITATION
 Occupational approach- teaching the skills
needed for the job by counting movements,
using assistive devices, etc
TYPES OF REHABILITATION
 Chemical approach- chemicals are used to
slow the vision loss
 Psychological approach- counselling the

patient and family groups has great impact

over their quality of life
TYPES OF REHABILITATION
 Neuro surgical approach- these are certain
interventions to stop the progressive visual
loss such as medications and visual
restoration therapy
TYPES OF REHABILITATION
 Genetic approach- corrected DNA is injected
through viral vector , to prevent the release
of faulty protein
 Mobility training-it makes the blind patient

move independently. RFID floors, talking

Brailie ,special wheel chairs and reality sound
systems can be used for this purposes
TYPES OF REHABILITATION
 Home training skills- self care, cognitive
training, communication skills, vocational
advice and psychological support----improve
the QOL
