Introduction
TRIBOLOGY
Is the science and technology for understanding
and controlling friction, wear, and lubrication of
interacting surfaces in relative motion.
POLYMER TRIBOLOGY
Recent development has catalyzed a shift from
metal/metal or metal/ceramic to metal/polymer or
polymer/polymer surface contact component.
Polymer/metal contacts generally, do not follow the
Laws of friction.
The reasons for this are several, including the relative
softness of polymers compared to metals, their much
lower thermal conductivities associated with heat
generation in contacts and also significantly lower
melting temperature.
They have been series of attempts to incorporate
various kinds of fibers/fillers into polymers to improve
their physical and mechanical properties.
Worldwide, about 100million Tera joule is used
annually to overcome friction and that is, about one
fifth of all energy produced
Background of study
Several researches have been carried out on the possibility of replacement of conventional
fillers with organic fillers. They include;
Tribological Behavior of Periwinkle Shell Powder-Filled Recycled Polypropylene
Composites was experimented on. The results showed that the incorporation of periwinkle
shell powder into polypropylene improved the wear resistance and fatigue strength but
showed no improvement in impact strength [Chukwudike Onuoha].
Also, The tribological properties of polyester composites reinforced with woven
glass reinforced polyester have been compared with seed oil palm reinforced
polyester. The results revealed that the glass fiber reinforced polymer composites have
better coefficient of friction and wear rate than seed oil palm reinforced polyester
composites [Ibrahim Refeey Ahmed et all].

polyester reinforced with periwinkle
That’s the problem this research seeks
to solve
Aim and Objective
The major aim of this work is to determine the effect of particle size on the
tribological behavior of periwinkle shell powder filled epoxy composite.
Other specific objectives include:
To determine the effect of particle size on the mechanical properties of the composite
The effect of introducing a hybrid periwinkle/charcoal/epoxy composite on the mechanical
properties of the composite,
To determine the elemental compositions of the periwinkle shell powder and its active
ingredients
To investigate the tribological properties and/or behaviors of periwinkle shell filled-epoxy
composites and to ascertain their applicability in various areas of engineering, involving
friction and wear.

Significance of study
This research will provide the necessary results to
ascertain the mechanical properties of periwinkle
filled epoxy composite, such as; tensile strength,
tensile modulus, flexural strength, percentage
elongation, tri-bological properties etc, which are
quite pivotal for engineering application and design.
Justification of study
To provide certain experimental data/results will aid the
applicability of periwinkle fill epoxy composite in
engineering design particularly, areas that bothers on
friction, wear, and two surfaces in contact.
