Visualization and Extraction of Geobody

A geobody is a 3D object derived from seismic data, which can include multiple sub-elements called geoblobs. It is utilized for creating 3D representations, aiding in fault interpretation, and enhancing seismic visualization. The document outlines the process of blending seismic volumes and extracting geobodies for applications like channel detection and property modeling.

VISUALIZATION AND

EXTRACTION OF GEOBODY
What is a Geobody?

 A geobody is a 3D object extracted from a seismic volume.

 A geobody can contain several sub elements (Geoblobs).

Uses of Geobody:

 You can build up your 3D object representation by repeatedly extracting many sub
elements.
 The geobody can be used as input to a property model, surfaces or as a voxel mask
for further seismic visualization.
 It can also help in quick fault interpretation.
Geobody used for Channel Detection
In this example, we will blend two seismic cubes together via the geobodies interpretation tools, i.e.
VolA & VolB. Prior to start with the different steps, the user needs to ensure the Geobody
Interpretation process is activated (bold) (Process Pane > Geophysics). By doing so, the geobody
tool bar – Cf. image below – will pop up in the function bar area

Geobody Concept Introduction

-Plot the seismic time slices of each cube in a 3D window, and find the nice channel features for
instance.
-Once the box probe is shaped as desired: Input Pane > Box probe Settings > Opacity tab. Part of
the histogram colors can be filtered out to isolate the desired features, in this case the channel.
After filtering, the user can extract geobodies from the box probe in two different ways:
Geobody Blending
In this example, VolA & VolB are about to be blend together.

-In the Opacity tab, the interpreter now has the possibility to filter with two histograms or to switch to
a Crossplot mode as shown in the image below.
-From both “Points view” and “Density view”, the interpreter can use the tools available on the right
side of the opacity tab to define areas of filtering directly on the crossplot.

Several polygons can be drawn by holding the Ctrl key – see images below.
-In the “Crossplot selections” window – store table
-Each polygon can be given a color defined by the interpreter – The area filtered will be given the
same color in the display window, so the user can know which

-Once the box probe has been filtered has desired, the geobody can be extracted in the same way
as describe before, either by using the Automatic geobody extraction or the manual geobody
extraction tool from the function bar.
Geobody to 3D Grid Model
The Geobody can be converted as a 3D model property.
When doing this conversion, the voxel bodies are converted to cells bodies.

To QC, the user can tile two 3D windows and display the geobody and the geobody property in
each of them.
Conclusions

 In Petrel Geobody Interpretation (PGI) “what you see is what you pick”

 PGI uses a volume blending approach to isolate features from seismic

data

 The isolated feature can then be further used in various processes like
property modeling, seismic interpretation, neural network
