INTRODUCTION
• The fishery business is one of the fastest growing businesses due to
the increase in demand of fish on account of its high nutritional value
and associated health benefits.
• The supply chain is the most vital element in ensuring that the
produce is delivered to the consumer in minimum time post acquiring
the produces as fish is one of the most perishable the quality and
nutritional values tends to diminishes with the delay in time and lack
of proper logistics.
• Post-harvest handling of the fish on land involves transportation of
the catch, preprocessing the raw material and processing it to the
desired product.
• Hence during handling the temperature of the fish should be kept as
low as possible to maintain the quality.
3
• Fisheries and aquaculture are an very important source of
food, nutrition, employment and income in Pune division.
• The importance of post- harvest technology lies in the fact
that is has the capability to meet fish requirement of
growing population by eliminating losses. In some location,
more fish is caught at a time than can be consumed.
• Methods are used in storaging the surplus fish in good
condition for later consumption.
• It is also necessary to transport fish to target market or
processing companies, While it is in good quality and price.
4
• Fishing in India is a major sector within the economy of India contributing
1.07% of its total GDP. The fishing sector in India supports the livelihood
of over 28 million people in the country, especially within the marginalized
and vulnerable communities
• India is the third largest fish producing country in the world accounting for
7.96% of the global production and second largest producer of fish through
aquaculture, after China.
• The total fish production during the FY 2020-21 is estimated at 14.73
million metric tonnes.
• According to the National Fisheries Development Board the Fisheries
Industry generates an export earnings of Rs 334.41 billion. Centrally
sponsored schemes will increase exports by Rs 1 lakh crore in FY25.
65,000 fishermen have been trained under these schemes from 2017 to
2020. Freshwater fishing consists of 55% of total fish production.
• Each year, India celebrates 10, July as the National Fish Farmers day.[5]
Koyilandy harbour in Kerala is the largest fishing harbour in Asia. It5 has
the longest breakwater.
• Maharashtra has 720 km. of coastline with a continental
shelf area of 111512 sq. km and 5 coastal districts Thane,
Raigad, Greater Mumbai, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg.
Maharashtra state ranks 7th with around 5 %share in the
country’s fish production and is yet to explore its
untapped potential completely. Marine fisheries had
always a major share (currently 82 %) compared to inland
fisheries (currently 18 %) for Maharashtra.
• There is not a single and well equipped and constructed
fish market in Pune districts, only in Indapur there is
small fish market by Nagar parishad.

Fish market in 2020-2021
Total fish production=162.48 lakh tonnes
Marine fish Production =41.27 lakh tonnes
Inland Fish production=121.21 lakh tonnes
Quantity of fisheries Export =13,69,264 tonnes
In the year 2020-2021
Contribution of Fisheries sector in Indian
economy=Rs.2,32,620 crore
Contribution of Economy of Fisheries sector in Agriculture
economy=6.27 %
Annual growth rate in fish production =10.34%
Per capita Consumption of fish =6.31

. SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
• Supply Chain play the most crucial role in the perishable goods industry to ensure
that the produce is delivered to the consumer at the desired quality and time. The
inefficiencies in the supply chain can create an adverse impact on all areas of
business such as loss of resources, decrease in revenue, reduction in the number of
consumers and loss of consumer confidence leading to loss of goodwill. It is
therefore essential to study the supply chain especially with reference to the fishery
industry to identify the areas of efficiency to further improve the same and
communicate to the industry and areas of inefficiency to overcome the same and
avoid the adversarial impacts of the same.

Significance
• Maharashtra, the third largest State of the Indian Union, both
in population and geographical area, In inland fish
production The state stands on 17th number in India.
• There are 403 dam in Pune division and 83 dam in Pune
district. In that total 64 dam are perennial. Total available
water spread area under reservoirs and lakes in Pune district
is 17,347 ha.
• It is observed that after harvesting of the fish from the lake
and reservoirs around 18 % of the fish production is get
wasted due to improper handling and lack of arability of
supply chain and infrastructure. For the effective fisheries
business to study the supply chain management and its
current problems is a important aspect in current situation to
prevent losses and to do the supporting research for better9
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
To study the availability of existing Infrastructure for
efficient Supply Chain management in fishery business in
the post-harvesting period.
To study the importance of efficient Supply Chain
management in fishery business in post-harvesting period
for maintaining the quality freshness and nutritional value of
fish.
To study the role of efficient Supply Chain management in
fishery business in the post-harvesting in the generation of
employment and income levels.
To study the contribution of efficient Supply Chain
management in fishery business in the post-harvesting
period towards Rural development. 10
Objectives
To study the loss of resources arising due to inefficient
Supply Chain management in fishery business in the post-
harvesting period.
To identify the limitations existing in Supply Chain
management in fishery business in post-harvesting period
and to communicate the same to the industry participants,
experts and Governing authorities.
To identify means and methods to improve the efficiency
of Supply Chain management in fishery business in post-
harvesting period and to communicate the same to the
industry participants, experts and Governing authorities.

Limitations of the Study
The results of the study are bound to be affected
because of the following Limitations.
i) Some biased response exist while interviewing
the demographic variables of employees
ii) Researcher may have to face limitations with
the data collection method proposed i.e.
survey method using a questionnaire due to
low response rate, complex questions or
perception of respondents towards the
questions

Hypothesis
• H1 Existing Infrastructure is sufficiently developed to support efficient Supply Chain management in
fishery business in the post-harvesting period.
• H0 Existing Infrastructure is not sufficiently developed to support efficient Supply Chain management
in fishery business in the post-harvesting period.
• H2 Inefficient Supply Chain management in fishery business in the post-harvesting period results in
the loss of quality freshness and nutritional value of fish.
• H0 Inefficient Supply Chain management in fishery business in the post-harvesting period results
does not impact the quality freshness and nutritional value of fish.
• H3 Efficient Supply Chain management in fishery business in the post-harvesting leads to generation
of employment and increase in the income.
• H0 Efficient Supply Chain management in fishery business in the post-harvesting does not have
a significant impact on the generation of employment and increase in the income.
• H4 Efficiency in Supply Chain management in fishery business in the post-harvesting period
significantly contributes toward rural development.
• 13

Details For Preparation of Questionnaire
• Researcher will use two sources of information that
is primary and secondary sources of information.
• Considering the number of consumers in various
segments in the sample, researcher had planned to
collect the primary data through “mail questionnaire
method”.
• The primary data will be collected with the help of
structured questionnaire from employees of human
resource personnel .
• Therefore, the questionnaire will be used as a main
tool for collection of primary data from the whole
sellers, retailer and consumers.

Details For Preparation of Questionnaire
• The nature of the study.
• The different constraints are taken in to
account for the selection of sample which
benefits the requirements of the study.
• Possibility of accessing the data.
• Willingness of respondents to give data.
• The sample size selected for the purpose on
the study is 125 fishing families, 80
wholesalers, 150 retailers and 1000 consumers .
