PIE CHART
Here are some tips and tricks for writing a task 1 essay for the IELTS exam that involves a
pie chart:
• Start by introducing the pie chart and its main features. For example, you can write
"The pie chart illustrates the percentage of households in the UK that own pets. It can be
seen that the majority of households own a dog, while a smaller percentage own a cat.“

• Use the present simple tense to describe the information shown in the pie chart. For
example, "Dogs are the most popular pet, accounting for 40% of all households.“

• Use comparative language to compare different categories in the pie chart. For example,
"Cats are less popular than dogs, with only 30% of households owning a feline."
PIE CHART
• Use appropriate linking words to connect ideas and show how different categories in the
pie chart relate to each other. For example, "While dogs are the most popular pet, cats are
also relatively common, with only a 10% difference in ownership between the two.“

• Use the word "overall" to refer to the total sum of all the categories in the pie chart. For
example, "Overall, 70% of UK households own a pet.“

• Conclude your essay by summarizing the main points and restating the main trend shown
in the pie chart.

• Use specific language to describe the proportions of the different categories in the chart.
For example, "The largest slice of the pie, representing 35%, is for housing and
household bills. The next largest slice, representing 25%, is for transport."
