Topic: mass, weight and gravity

Learning Objectives

Describe what is meant by weight and calculate the

weight of an object.

Success Criteria

1. Define mass and gravitational field.

2. Describe weight as the force acting on an object due to gravity.
3. Investigate the relationship between mass and weight.
4. Apply the equation of weight.
Big Question

If you are travelling to moon or other planet , do

you feel any changes in your weight? How will
it affect your mass?
[Link] an object has more mass, then it will

A. weigh more. B. weigh less.

C. weigh the same as an object with less mass. D. always have more volume than an object
with less mass.

2. What is the equation used to calculate pressure?

A. pressure= force/mass B. pressure =mass/volume

C. pressure=area/force D. pressure=force/area

Key Words/Scientific Vocabulary :

Gravitational field: It is a region where object with mass experience a force.

Weight: It is a force and measured in Newtons (N).
Mass: Amount of matter possessed by a body and is measured in Kg.

Gravitational field
• The weight of a body is due to the gravitational
force with which the Earth attracts a body.

• Gravitational force is a non-contact force. For example, the

velocity of a body, thrown up, goes on decreasing while on
return its velocity goes on increasing. This is due to the
gravitational pull of the Earth acting on the body whether the
body is in contact with the Earth or not.

• It is assumed that a gravitational field exists all around the

Earth.

Gravitational field around the Earth is

towards its centre
• The gravitational field becomes weaker and weaker as we go farther
and farther away from the Earth.

• In the gravitational field of the Earth, the gravitational

force per unit mass is called gravitational field strength of the Earth.

Value of gravitational field strength on Earth is

10 N / Kg
