THE SOLAR
SYSTEM
Did You Know?
The Earth is not alone in the universe. It is not the only
planet in the galaxy. We have other family members in the
solar system.
Planets: There are eight recognized planets in our solar
system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, and Neptune.
Sun: The Sun is at the center of our solar system and
contains about 99.8% of the solar system's mass. It's a G-
type main-sequence star, classified as a yellow dwarf.
Space Exploration: Humans have sent spacecraft to
explore various parts of our solar system. Missions have
visited all of the planets except for Pluto (which was visited
by the New Horizons probe in 2015) and explored
numerous moons, asteroids, and comets.
Moons: Many planets in our solar system have moons. For
example, Jupiter has the most moons with over 80 known
satellites, while Earth has one natural satellite, the Moon.
Unlocking of Difficulties:
Solar System- a group of planets where Earth is included
together with the Sun.
Planets- A large celestial body, smaller than a star but
larger than an asteroid, that does not produce its own light.
Stars- is a luminous sphere of plasma held together by its
own gravity. The nearest star to the Earth is the Sun. Many
others stars are visible to the naked eye from Earth during
the night.
Moon- the natural satellite of the Earth, visible at night by
reflected light from the sun.
Meteors- is a bright streak of light in the sky(a “shooting
star "or a “falling star”)produced by the entry of a small
meteoroid into the Earth’s atmosphere.
Galaxy- group of stars and other heavenly bodies.
Inner Planets
Mercury, Venus, Earth,
and Mars are known as the
inner planets or terrestrial
planets.
They are primarily composed
of rock, metal and have
solid surfaces.

Outer Planets
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus,
and Neptune are known as
the outer planets or gas
giants.
They are much larger than
the inner planets and are
mostly composed of
hydrogen and helium.
Dwarf Planets
In addition to the eight
recognized planets, there are
also dwarf planets such as
Pluto, Eris, Haumea,
Makemake, and Ceres.
These are smaller celestial
bodies that orbit the Sun.
Other Heavenly Bodies
Asteroid Belt: Between the orbits of Mars
and Jupiter lies the asteroid belt, which is
home to millions of rocky objects called
asteroids.
Kuiper Belt: Beyond Neptune's orbit is the
Kuiper Belt, a region of the solar system
containing icy bodies, including Pluto and
other dwarf planets.
Oort Cloud: The Oort Cloud is a theoretical
sphere of icy bodies surrounding the solar
system at a distance of up to 100,000
