OBJECTIVES:
At the end of 60 minutes
discussion, 80% of the learners
are expected to meet the
following outcomes:
1. Identify the definition of a Tile
and its origin;
2. Determine the materials, tools
and equipment used for tiling
works. (TLE_IATS9-12FT-Ia-j-1)
Tile
are usually thin, square or rectangular
covering manufactured from hard-wearing
material ceramic, stone, metal, baked clay,
or even glass.
use for covering roofs, floors, walls, showers,
or other objects such as tabletops.
ORIGIN:
The history of tiles dates back thousands of
years, with evidence of their use found in
ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia,
Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome. The origin
of tiles can be traced back to around 4000
BCE when the first clay tiles were created by
the Mesopotamians.
ORIGIN:
These early tiles were
primarily made of clay, but
as time went on, different
cultures started
experimenting with new
materials. One significant
development in tile history
was the introduction of
mosaic tiles by the Greeks.
About Mosaic Tiles were
created by placing small,
colored pieces of stone or
glass in a pattern to create
intricate designs.

e:
• The raw materials used
to create tiles are all
found in the ground.
• These raw materials
like clay is quarried
and refined.
• They are then mixed.
Manufactur

Magnesium
other ingredients are
pressed into a mold
and then fired at an
extremely high
temperature.
• The ingredients used in
this process are slightly
wet.
Manufactur
• They are forced

through a nozzle,
which forms the tile’s
shape.

SETTING
1.5 GROUT FLOAT
- This is a rubber-backed,
rectangular trowel for spreading the
grout. It resembles the common float.
TOOLS USED IN TILE
2. TILE SPACER
- Spacers are used to keep each
SETTING
tile an equal distance apart during
tile installation. Spacers make it
possible to keep straight grout lines
and square tiles together as the
adhesive dries.
TOOLS USED IN TILE
3. SPIRIT LEVEL/ LEVEL BAR
SETTING
- Used to check the vertical as
well as horizontal alignment of
structures to be tiled.
TOOLS USED IN TILE
4. PLUMB BOB

GROUP TASK:
Simple student group activity about planning tiling works:
Group Activity: "Tile It Right!"
Objective:
To plan and design a tile layout for a small room.
Questions to Ask:
- What tile pattern did you choose and why?
- How did you decide on the grout spacing and color?
- What challenges did you face when designing the tile layout?

as a starting point for specific
projects which may require
additional considerations or
variations on these steps.
