Causes and Solutions of Climate Change

Climate change refers to long-term changes in average weather conditions, primarily driven by human activities such as fossil fuel combustion, deforestation, and industrial processes. Its effects include rising sea levels, extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, and increased poverty. Solutions involve transitioning to renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and implementing sustainable practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Science Behind Climate

Change – Understanding the

causes, effects, and solutions
What is Climate Change?
Climate change is a long-term change
in a region's average weather
conditions, such as temperature and
rainfall. It's different from natural
weather variability because it's a trend
that lasts over decades.
Natural processes of climate change

• Volcanoes
• Tectonic plate movement
• Changes in the sun
• Shifts in Earth’s orbit
Human activities
• Fossil fuel combustion:
Burning coal, oil, and natural gas for
electricity generation, transportation, and
industrial processes releases large amounts
of CO2.
• Deforestation:
• Clearing forests reduces the planet's ability
to absorb CO2 through photosynthesis
Agriculture:
Livestock farming and the use of synthetic fertilizers
contribute to methane and nitrous oxide emissions.
Industrial processes:
Certain industrial activities release
greenhouse gases.
Generating power:
For producing electricity we need to burn coal, gases and so on.

Using transportation:
Most cars, lorries, ships and planes run on fossil fuels. That makes
transportation a major contributor of greenhouse gases, especially carbon-
dioxide emissions.
Effects of Climate Change
• Rising sea levels:
• Melting glaciers and ice sheets cause sea levels to
rise, threatening coastal communities.
• Extreme weather events:
Increased frequency and intensity of hurricanes,
droughts, floods, heatwaves, and wildfires
. Ocean acidification:
Increased CO2 absorption by oceans leads to
changes in ocean chemistry, impacting marine life
• Biodiversity loss:
Climate change can disrupt ecosystems and cause
species extinction
• Food insecurity:
Changing weather patterns can affect crop yields and
food production

• Loss of species
Climate change poses risks to the survival of species on
land and in the ocean.
• Hotter temperatures
As greenhouse gas concentrations rise, so does the
global surface temperature. The last decade, 2011-2020,
is the warmest on record.
• Poverty and displacement
Climate change increases the factors that put and
keep people in poverty. Floods may sweep away
urban slums, destroying homes and livelihoods.
Potential Solutions
• Renewable energy transition:
Switching to clean energy sources like solar, wind,
and geothermal power
• Energy efficiency:
Improving energy efficiency in buildings and
industries to reduce energy consumption
• Carbon capture and storage :
Technologies to capture CO2 emissions from power
plants and store them underground
• Sustainable transportation:
Promoting electric vehicles and public
transportation

• Reforestation:
Planting trees to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere

• Policy and regulations:

Implementing government policies to incentivize
low-carbon practices and reduce emissions
Conclusion:

The scientific consensus is clear: human

activities are the primary cause of climate
change, and urgent action is needed to
mitigate its impacts by drastically reducing
greenhouse gas emissions through
transitioning to renewable energy sources
and implementing sustainable practices
across all sectors.
