APPROACH,

TECHNIQUE,
STRATEGY AND
METHODS IN
TEACHING
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN APPROACH, METHOD
STRATEGY AND TECHNIQUE IN
TEACHING?
WHAT IS APPROACH?
Approach:
o This is the broadest level. It reflects your underlying philosophy
or beliefs about the nature of language learning and teaching.
o It provides the theoretical framework that guides your decisions.
o Examples: Constructivist approach, behaviorist approach,
communicative approach.
o Essentially, it's the "why" behind your teaching.
EXAMPLE:
◦Approach: Communicative Approach
Description:
oFocuses on enabling learners to use language
meaningfully for real-world communication.
oPrioritizes fluency over strict grammatical
accuracy in initial stages.
WHAT IS METHOD?
Method:
oA method is a systematic plan for presenting material. It's the
practical realization of an approach.
oIt involves a set of procedures and techniques that are used in
the classroom.
oExamples: Direct instruction method, inquiry-based method,
project-based method.
oEssentially, it is the overall planned procedure.
EXAMPLE:
◦Method: Task-Based Learning (TBL)
Description:
oStudents learn by completing authentic tasks, like
planning a trip or solving a problem.
oLanguage is acquired as a byproduct of task completion.
oThis method is often used within a communicative
approach.
WHAT IS STRATEGY?
Strategy:
oStrategies are specific actions taken to achieve
learning objectives within a method.
oThey are planned actions to achieve a goal.
oThey can involve various methods and techniques.
oEssentially, it is a plan of action.
EXAMPLE:
◦Strategy: Information Gap Activities
Description:
oStudents work in pairs or groups, each possessing
different pieces of information needed to complete a task.
oThey must communicate to fill the gaps.
oThis is a strategy that can be used within the Task-Based
Learning method.
WHAT IS TECHNIQUE?
Technique:
oA technique is a very specific, concrete activity or task
used in the classroom.
oIt's a particular way of carrying out a step in a method.
oExamples: Brainstorming, role-playing, using flashcards.
oEssentially, it is a specific action taken in the classroom.
EXAMPLE:
◦Technique: Role-Playing
Description:
oStudents take on roles and act out scenarios,
practicing language in a simulated real-life context.
oThis is a technique that can be used within
information gap activities.
 The approach is your general philosophy.
 The method is the overall plan.
 The strategy is the plan of action to achieve the goal.
 The technique is the specific thing you do in the
classroom.
Therefore, an approach gives rise to a method, a
method employs strategies, and strategies utilize
techniques.
