DECONGESTAN
T
Nasal congestion (Stuffy Nose)
Nasal congestion can be caused by
anything that irritates or inflames the nasal
tissues.
Infections such as cold, flu or sinusitis and
allergies are frequent causes of nasal
congestion and runny nose.
Nasal decongestants
 Nasal decongestants are the drugs that
reduce congestion of nasal passages, which
in turn open clogged nasal passages and
enhances drainages of the sinuses.
 These drugs stimulates alpha adrenergic
receptors of respiratory mucosa to produce
vasoconstriction that leads to shrinkage of
swollen nasal mucous membrane and
reduction of tissue hyperemia, edema and
nasal congestion.

It is a sympathomimetic vasoconstrictor.
MOA- It temporarily relieves nasal
congestion by constricting blood vessels in
the nasal mucosa.

Adverse drug reaction- Hypertension,

tachycardia,stomach cramps, dizziness,
headache

Uses- Sympathomimetic vasoconstrictor,

nasal decongestant inhaler
Alpha-2-adrenergic receptor
agonist
ΟΧΥΜΕΤΑΖOLINE

binds adrenergic receptor

activates a2 adrenergic receptors

Constriction of the arterioles in the nose

decreasing nasal congestion

 Uses of oxymetazoline –
- used in allergies, cold
- used in sinus congestion.
Corticosteroids

Anti-inflammatory effect Work

to turn off the immune system
cells in the inflammatory
response involved.
Decreased inflammation results
in decreased congestion.
Nasal stuffiness is relieved.
