Lesson 6
Synthetic Division
Synthetic division
A shorthand method of dividing a polynomial
by a linear binomial by using only the
coefficients. For synthetic division to work, the
polynomial must be written in standard form,
using 0 and a coefficient for any missing
terms, and the divisor must be in the form (x –
a).
Examples:
Divide the ff using synthetic
division
Note: Express answer in the form of Q(x) +
1. (k3 − k2 − k − 2) ÷ (k − 2)
2. (n4 + 10n3 + 5n2 + 6n − 8) ÷ (n + 2)
3. (4n3 − 7n2 + 9n + 3) ÷ (n − 1)
4. (p4 − 8p3 + 10p2 + 2p + 3) ÷ (p − 2)
