DIMENSIONS
Three specific dimensions

Physical Mental Social

09/03/2025 21
PHYSICAL DIMENSION

“Perfect functioning" of the body

Health biologically as a state in which every cell and

every organ is functioning at optimum capacity and
in perfect harmony with the rest of the body.

However, the term "optimum" is not definable

09/03/2025 22
PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS-
INDICATORS
Miscellaneous Indicators: "a good complexion, a clean
skin, bright eyes,

Lustrous hair with a body well clothed with firm flesh, not
too fat, a sweet breath, a good appetite, sound sleep,

Regular activity of bowels and bladder and

Smooth, easy, coordinated bodily movements

09/03/2025 23
PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS-
INDICATORS
All the organs of the body are of unexceptional size
and function normally

All the special senses are intact

The resting pulse rate, blood pressure and exercise

tolerance are all within the range of "normality" for the
individual's age and sex
09/03/2025 24
PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS-
INDICATORS
This state of normality has fairly wide limits.

These limits are set by observation of a large

number of "normal" people, who are free from
evident disease.

09/03/2025 25
EVALUATION OF PHYSICAL
HEALTH- INDIVIDUAL LEVEL
Self assessment of overall health

Inquiry into symptoms of ill-health and risk factors

Inquiry into medications

Inquiry into levels of activity (e.g., number of days of

restricted activity within a specified time, degree of fitness)

Inquiry into use of medical services (e.g., the number of

visits to a physician, number of hospitalizations) in the recent
past
09/03/2025 26
EVALUATION OF PHYSICAL
HEALTH- INDIVIDUAL LEVEL
Standardized questionnaires for cardiovascular
diseases

Standardized questionnaires for respiratory

diseases

Clinical examination

Nutrition and dietary assessment, and

09/03/2025 27
COMMUNITY LEVEL
ASSESSMENT INDICATORS
At the community level, the state of health may be assessed by
such indicators

Death rate; Infant mortality rate and expectation of life.

Each piece of information should be individually useful

When combined: A complete health profile of individuals and

communities.
09/03/2025 28
MENTAL DIMENSION
Good mental health is the ability to respond to the
many varied experiences of life with flexibility and a
sense of purpose

"a state of balance between the individual and the

surrounding world, a state of harmony between
oneself and others, a coexistence between the
realities of the self and that of other people and that
09/03/2025 29
MENTAL DIMENSION-
BIOLOGICAL COMPONENT
Major mental illnesses such as depression and
schizophrenia have a biological component

Inference: a behavioral, psychological or biological

dysfunction and that the disturbance in the mental
equilibrium is not merely in the relationship between
the individual and the society
09/03/2025 30
