Defining LANGUAGE

DEFINITION

● Language is a medium of communication


● Language can be displayed in various forms ( written,
oral, verbal and nonverbal cues)
● An avenue for expressing ideas, thoughts,and
feelings
● It builds relationships and bridges the gap between
diverse groups of people
FEATURES

1. Language is dynamic : changes / evolves over


time
2. Language creates a cultural identity
3. Language is arbitrary (variations, depending on
culture or context)
4. Language is productive
EXAMPLES

● Changes on intonation, pronunciation, manner of


speaking (politeness)
● Language defines who we are (what country we belong
to, traces back to the roots) ; the use of ‘po’ and ‘opo’ as
a sign of respect to elders
● Native dialect (Northeast part of India) : abuter ( uncle or
big father)
