LESSON
OBJECTIVES:
After the discussion the students will be able to learn the
following:
1. . Define the types of ceiling systems and their applications.
2. Calculate quantities of materials needed for ceilings and tiling projects.
3. Identify different types of paints and calculate the quantities required for
painting surfaces
INTRODUCTION:
Interior design involves ceiling, tiles,
and painting works that enhance a
space's aesthetics and functionality.
Ceiling works include false ceilings,
exposed ceilings, and decorative
designs, while tile works involve
installing various tiles for flooring,
walls, and backsplashes. Painting
works define a room's atmosphere,
protect surfaces, and offer creative
possibilities through finishes and wall
treatments. These elements transform
and personalize any space.

CEILING
A ceiling is the upper boundary of a space, made from materials like
plaster, gypsum board, wood, metal, or suspended ceiling. It plays a crucial
role in functionality and aesthetics, supporting the load of upper floors and
roof, enhancing aesthetic value, improving acoustics, and providing energy
efficiency. Ceilings can conceal utilities like wiring and pipes, and some types
offer fire protection and lighting solutions. Their combination of form and
function makes them a vital element in construction projects.
CEILING
TYPES OF CEILING SYSTEMS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS
1. Suspended or Drop Ceilings.
This ceiling system consists of a metal
grid suspended below the original
ceiling, with tiles or panels placed into
the grid. This type of Ceiling system is
ideal for commercial buildings, offices,
and spaces where easy access to
wiring and utilities is required, such as
hospitals, schools, and airports.

2. Gypsum Ceiling.
Gypsum Ceiling are made using
gypsum board or plasterboard, which
is a cost-effective and versatile option.
Common in residential buildings and
offices, these ceiling provides a
smooth finish and are easy to install.

3. Tiled Ceiling.
A ceiling system using ceramic or
metal tiles that are laid in a grid
pattern. Often used in bathrooms,
kitchens, or other high-humidity areas
where easy cleaning and moisture
resistance are important.

4. Wooden Ceiling.
Wood panels are used to create ceiling
that add warmth and elegance to a
space. Frequently found in residential
buildings, luxury hotels, and
restaurants to give a natural and
warm aesthetic.

5. Stretch Ceilings.
Made of a stretchable PVC film or
fabric stretched across a frame. It
offers a smooth and modern look with
the possibility of incorporating
lighting. Often used in contemporary
interior designs, these ceilings are
suitable for both residential and
commercial spaces.

6. Acoustic Ceilings.
These ceilings are designed to reduce
noise levels by using materials like
acoustic tiles or panels. Primarily used
in theaters, offices, classrooms, and
hospitals where control sound is
necessary.
CEILING
Ceiling Joist The ceiling joist, also known as the nailing strip, is a
structural member in building construction where the ceiling board is
fastened. Common sizes for ceiling joists include 1 x 2, 1 1/2 x 2, 2 x
2, and 2 x 3, with spacing determined by the dimensions of the ceiling
board for economic reasons.

Find the total board foot required for a 4.00 x 5.80 meters living room
5.8 m 2x2 spaced @ .40 m
Horizontal 2x2 @ .40 m
CEILING
Ceiling Board.
There are numerous kinds of ceiling board of different brand, quality
and dimensions available for building construction. However, the
simplest way of finding the number of boards required is to divide the
total ceiling area by the effective covering of one ceiling board chosen
or by the square meter method.
SAMPLE PROBLEM
An office room measures 6.00 x 9.60 meters long specify a 60 x 120
cm. Ceiling board, List down the materials required.
9.6 m
6.00 m 120 x 240 cm ceiling board
TILEWORK
Ceramic tile, one of man's oldest unique building materials, is known
for its durability, functional, and aesthetic properties. It offers unlimited
design patterns and color choices, and has been extensively used since
the Medieval Islamic Architecture period from Persia to Spain. Its
popularity continues to be widespread in contemporary architecture.
TILEWORK
Ceramic Tiles are Classified into:
1. Glazed Tiles - principally used for walls
and light duty floors and toppings.
2. Unglazed Tiles - homogeneous
composition, hard and dense quality
primarily used for floors and walls.

Various Types of Tiles
Ceramic Tiles Porcelain Tiles Vinyl Tiles
Marble Tiles Glass Tiles Terracotta Tiles

2. 20 x 20 cm. unglazed floor tiles
3. Cement for mortar
4. White cement for joist filler

PAINTING WORKS
Painting is a crucial process in construction projects, providing
decoration and protection to surfaces like walls, ceilings, and woodwork.
It adds color, style, and longevity to a building, while also enhancing the
overall atmosphere. Proper painting helps protect surfaces from
moisture, stains, and fading, while also enhancing lighting and creating
a polished look. Overall, painting contributes to the appearance and
durability of a space, making it a vital aspect of any construction
project.

TYPES OF PAINT AND THEIR APPLICATIONS
1. Emulsion Paint. A water-based paint made from pigments, binders,
and water. It's easy to apply and dries quickly. Widely used for interior
walls and ceilings due to its smooth finish and low odor.
2. Oil-Based Paint. Paints that use oil as a binder and are known for
their durability and glossiness. Suitable for woodwork, doors, and
windows, as it offers a hard, long-lasting finish.
3. Acrylic Paint. A fast-drying water-based paint that uses acrylic resin
for a flexible and durable finish. Suitable for both interior and exterior
surfaces, including wood, metal, and masonry.

4. Textured Paint. Paint with added ingredients to provide a textured
finish, adding depth and character to walls. Often used for feature walls,
accent walls, or in areas where a unique aesthetic is desired.
5. Chalk Paint. Known for its matte finish and smooth texture, chalk
paint is popular for upcycling furniture. Used mainly on furniture and
small decorative items, it’s great for creating a vintage or distressed
look.
6. Enamel Paint. A hard, glossy paint that is resistant to chipping,
fading, and staining. Often used on surfaces that undergo heavy use,
such as doors, window frames, and kitchen cabinets.

Estimating your paint
Paint manufacturer specifications indicate an estimated area coverage
per gallon with a net content of 4 liters, typically within a 10-point
range. For example, one gallon of Quick Drying Enamel covers 30-40
square meters, depending on the surface texture, ranging from 30 to 40
square meters.
The problem therefore is, what amount for which surface texture will be
used? to simplify our estimate, surface texture will be classified into
three categories such as:
1. Coarse to rough surface 30 sq. m. coverage area
2. Fine to coarse surface
3. Smooth to fine 35 sq. m. coverage area 40 sq. m. coverage area
SAMPLE PROBLEM
A concrete firewall measures 30 meters long and 12 meters high.
Determine the number of gallons (4 liters content) required using
Acrylic Gloss Latex Paint if the wall is wooden trowel finish (coarse to
rough).
SEATWORK
[Link] the total board foot and ceiling board of an office measures
5.80 meter long by 4.00 meters width. Using 2” by 3” ceiling joist
spaced 60 centimeters by 60 centimeters.
2. The computed areas and the number of coats and coverage of paint
to be used for a painting job are as follows:
Area of masonry surface = 750 square meter
Primer coat to be used = 1 coat with coverage of 30 sq. m. per 4 liters
Topcoat to be used = 1 coat with coverage of 40 sq. m per 4 liters
