WHAT IS GLOBAL
WARMING?
Global warming refers to
the long-term increase in
Earth’s average surface
temperature due to human
activities - primarily the
burning of fossil fuels that
release greenhouse gases.
Greenhouse gases (GHGs) Major greenhouse gases; Carbon dioxide
are atmospheric gases that trap heat, (CO2) Methane (CH4)) Nitrous oxide (N2O)
Fluorinated gases, Water vapor (H2O)
preventing it from escaping into Ozone (O3)
space and thereby warming the
planet.
What is the Difference Between Global Warming
And Climate Change

The Earth getting hotter All the changes in our climate

Mostly greenhouse gasses system, caused partly by Global
trapping heat Warming
Recent rates of global warming (1994-2024,
bottom) are larger than the longer-term
average rates (1901-2024, top). Places that
have cooled are colored blue; places that
have warmed are colored yellow, orange, or
red. In the past three decades, many places
in the Northern Hemisphere have warmed by
1 degree Fahrenheit or more per decade.
Differences are most dramatic in the Arctic.
With the decline of ice and snow, the Arctic
reflects less incoming sunlight, which
amplifies the rate of greenhouse-gas-driven
warming.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES
OF GLOBAL WARMING?
CAUSES OF GLOBAL WARMING

• DEFORESTATION
• TRANSPORTATION (USE OF VEHICLES)
• CONSUMER GOODS
(CHLOROFLUOROCARBON)
• INDUSTRIAL AND AGRICULTURAL
PRACTICES
• OVERPOPULATION
• ELECTRICITY GENERATION
Human activities, principally through emissions of greenhouse gases,
have unequivocally caused global warming, with global surface
temperature reaching 1.1°C above 1850-1900 in 2011-2020.

The amount of future warming Earth will experience depends on how

much carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases we emit in coming
decades.
WHAT ARE THE EEFECTS
OF GLOBAL WARMING?
EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING
Rise in Temperature. Global warming has led to an incredible increase in earth’s
temperature. Since 1880, the earth’s temperature has increased by ~1 degrees. This
has resulted in an increase in the melting of glaciers, which have led to an increase in
the sea level. This could have devastating effects on coastal regions.
Threats to the Ecosystem. Global warming has affected the coral reefs that can lead to
the loss of plant and animal lives. Increase in global temperatures has made the fragility
of coral reefs even worse.
Loss of Biodiversity. A global shift in the climate leads to the loss of habitats of several
plants and animals..
Melting Polar Ice craps. Loss of ice sheets
High Mortality Rates Due to an increase in floods, tsunamis and other natural calamities,
the average death toll usually increases. Also, such events can bring about the spread of
diseases that can hamper human life.
Extreme weather event. Global warning has been linked to an increase in extreme
weather events, such as floods, tornadoes and hurricanes.
Spread of Diseases. Global warming leads to a change in the patterns of heat and
humidity. This has led to the movement of mosquitoes that carry and spread diseases.
Climate Change. Global warming has led to a change in climatic conditions. There are
droughts at some places and floods at some. This climatic imbalance is the result of
global warming.
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and other scientific
bodies, sea-level rise predictions for the year 2100 are based on different emissions
scenarios, with higher emissions leading to more severe outcomes.
Future sea-level rise is highly dependent on greenhouse gas emissions, with projections
ranging from a minimum of 0.3 meters to a high-end, low-confidence estimate of 2
meters or more by 2100. Since 1880, the global average sea level has already risen by
21 to 24 centimeters.

SUMMARY
Global warming is the long-term
increase in Earth’s average temperature
caused mainly by human activities such
as burning fossil fuels, deforestation,
and industrial processes. These
activities release greenhouse gases (like
carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous
oxide) that trap heat in the atmosphere,
leading to rising global temperatures. It
causes serious effects including melting
ice caps, rising sea levels, extreme
weather events, and disruptions to
ecosystems. Solutions include using
renewable energy, conserving forests,
reducing carbon emissions, and
promoting sustainable practices to
protect the planet for future
generations.
