Math Performance Strategy for Grade 10

The research investigates the factors affecting Grade 10 students' performance in mathematics at Notre Dame Village National High School, focusing on the implementation of the 'EASY' strategy. Despite initial expectations, the study found a decline in student performance after the intervention, indicating that the program was ineffective. Recommendations include adapting teaching methods and providing additional remedial classes to better support students with low competencies in mathematics.

PROJECT Y.

ES: A
STRATEGY TO RESOLVE
LEARNING DIFFICULTIES
OF GRADE 10 STUDENTS
IN NOTRE DAME VILLAGE
NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
The mastery of basic mathematical concepts is essential for
understanding more complex ones, as mathematics plays a crucial
role in the advancement of science and technology. However, many
students face challenges in learning basic numerical concepts,
leading to difficulties in their overall mathematical development and
confidence. This lack of proficiency can hinder academic success and
everyday problem-solving abilities. Strategies need to be
implemented to address these challenges, improve students’
performance, and develop a positive learning environment.
This research aims to identify factors affecting the performance of
Grade 10 learners in solving basic math concepts at Notre Dame Village
National High School. By understanding these factors, educators can
tailor instructional strategies to cater to different learning styles and
improve students’ academic performance, specifically in mathematics.
Implementing an easy and appropriate mathematical strategy can help
students overcome barriers and enhance their understanding of basic
mathematical concepts before progressing to more advanced topics.
Generally, the objective of this paper is to analyze
how Easy and Appropriate way in Solving Yielding
accurate result EASY: a math strategy addressing the
different factors affecting math performance of
student in Grade 10 level.

Specially, it intends to seek answer to these following

questions.
STATEMENT OF
THE PROBLEM 1. What is the pre-test performance of the Grade 10
student’s respondents?
2. What is the post-test performance of the Grade 10
student’s respondents after watching/using EASY?
3. Is there any significant difference between pre and
post test result of Grade 10 students respondents?
In conclusion, addressing the challenges faced by
students in learning mathematics is crucial to
ensuring their success in academics and future
career pursuits. By creating a supportive learning
environment and employing effective instructional
strategies, educators can help students develop a
solid foundation in mathematics and improve their
overall performance and confidence in the subject.

Significance of the Study
The researcher aims to understand the factors affecting
mathematic performance in Grade 10 Notre Dame
Village National High School students to prepare them
for senior high. The study will benefit students, teachers,
the school, and students by improving teaching methods,
identifying factors affecting performance, and providing
guidance on resolving these issues. The researcher will
face challenges in gathering information.

METHODOLOGY
Research Design
The study will used the quasi-experimental
research design establish cause and effect
relationship between variables. This design will be
used since the main purpose of the study is to
determine the factors affecting the mathematics
performance of the Grade 10 students. In contrast,
the students with least competencies will undergo
Intervention Program and use the EASY video
lesson that prepared by the researcher.
Participants of the Study

The study will be conducted at NDVNHS

School Division of Cotabato City located at
San Herminigildo St, Rosary Heights 08
Notre Dame Village, Cotabato City. The study
population comprised Grade 10 student that
has low academic performance in
mathematics of Notre Dame Village National
High School (NDVNHS) for school year
Research Instrument

The researcher will have a test

type of research instrument to
collect data about participant’s
knowledge, skills, attitudes,
values, and preference.
Research Procedure
1. The researcher will collect data using pre and post test in tests
assessment settings.
2. Respondent will get a consent letter for ethical consideration,
seeking their cooperation in completing the research tests
assessment. This will be conducted to the Grade 10 learners of
Notre Dame Village National High School.
3. The participants will be given a pre-test first along with the
instruction afterwards the respondents will take time to watch the
video lesson prepared by the researcher to take the post-test. After
the participants completed the tests assessment, the researcher will
collect the test papers/data.
Sampling Techniques

Systematic sampling method will

be used in this study. It is
statistical method to select
sample from the larger population
systematically and randomly.
Statistical Treatment/Measures

This study utilize Quasi experimental, which

enable us to represent and interpret the data
gathered more efficiently through numerical
calculation, graph, or tables. The data will be
examined precisely to avoid
misinterpretation and become valid.
CHAPTER IV
RESULT AND
DISCUSSION
The result from the pre-test (M= 6.5, SD= 1.96) and post-
test (M= 6, SD= 2.48) scores before and after the
intervention program shows the decrease of scores. The
result is significant because the null hypothesis rejected,
t(39) = 1.14, p(0.00) is less than 0.05. In other words, the
intervention program result is not effective in Pre-test
and Post-test in mathematics subject.
Summary of Findings
Pre-test: Students performed relatively well, with a mean score of
6.5, suggesting they understood the instructions and lessons.
Post-test: Student performance decreased, with a mean score of 6.
This indicates the intervention program, including the video, did
not improve their scores.
A significant difference exists between the pre-test and post-test
scores, showing a decline in performance.
The intervention program, including both face-to-face teaching and
the “Project Y.E.S” video, was deemed ineffective for improving the
test scores of the Grade 10 students with low competencies.
CONCLUSION
Grade 10 intervention program at Notre Dame
Village National High School showed a decline in
students’ mathematics performance. It suggests
that teachers need to adapt their teaching methods
to address the students’ difficulties in mathematics.
The author recommends further research to assess
learning recovery plans and to explore other factors
influencing student learning in mathematics and
other subjects.
RECOMMENDATION
As the results our study, the researcher suggestion is to
have full remedial class for all the students who has
low competencies grade particularly in mathematics
subject since the result shown is negative therefore the
intervention program of this research must be repeated
with different methods. The study also suggest that
mathematics subject must give more hours to study to
improve the knowledge of the student in this subject.
