Understanding Upper Limb Dermatomes

Dermatomes are areas of skin supplied by single spinal nerves, typically extending from the anterior to posterior median line around the trunk, with variations in limbs. The upper limb's cutaneous innervation primarily comes from spinal segments C5-C8 and T1, with a systematic numerical distribution of dermatomes. Clinical implications include sensory loss in skin areas corresponding to specific dermatomes following spinal cord or nerve root injuries.

DEFINITION

 The area of skin supplied by single spinal nerve.

 A typical dermatomes extends from anterior

median line to the posterior median line
around the trunk.

 In the limbs , the original uniform pattern

disturbed.
EMBRYOLOGICAL BASIS
 The limb may be regarded as an extension of
the body wall.
 The limb buds arise in the area of body wall
supplied by lateral branches of anterior primary
rami.

 Early human embryo shows regular

segmentation of the body.
IMPORTANT FEATURES
 The cutaneous innervation of the upper limb is
derived:

a. mainly from segments C5-C8 and T1 of the

spinal cords.
b. partially from the C3,C4 and T2

 The dermatomes of upper limb are

distributed in an orderly numerical sequence.
CLINICAL CORRELATION

• The area of sensory loss of the

skin, following injuries of the
spinal cord or the nerve roots
conforms to the dermatomes.
