In a case of high-tech cheating at Pune's Symbiosis College of Engineering, two students were allegedly caught using smart "meta glasses" during the engineering examination. According to sources, the incident came to light while engineering exams were in progress. Invigilators on duty reportedly became suspicious after noticing that the glasses worn by two students looked different from regular spectacles in terms of design and fitting.
When the staff members approached the students and checked the devices closely, they allegedly discovered that the spectacles were actually smart glasses equipped with electronic features.
Students Suspended From Exams
Following the discovery, both students were immediately stopped from appearing for the examination paper and were suspended from the ongoing examination process. The college administration has also initiated an internal inquiry into the matter.
Sources said that, as of now, there is no direct proof to establish whether the students had used the smart glasses to capture images of the question paper or access AI-generated answers during the exam. However, officials stated that carrying or using such electronic gadgets inside the examination hall itself amounts to a serious violation of examination rules.
Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal Director Dr. Vidya Yeravdekar said the university will hear the students’ side before taking a final decision. She added that further action would depend on the findings of the inquiry committee.
The matter has been referred to the institution’s Unfair Means Committee for investigation. Following the inquiry, the findings will be submitted to the university-level committee, which will determine the further course of action.
The incident has sparked concerns over the growing use of advanced technology and AI-enabled devices in academic cheating, with educational institutions now expected to tighten monitoring during examinations.
