PHP String stripos() Function

The PHP String stripos() function is used to determine the position of the first occurrence of a string in another string. This generates an integer representing the position of the first occurrence of the string. This function is case-insensitive, so it treats both upper- and lower-case characters equally. This function works similarly to strpos(), except that it is case insensitive, whereas strpos() is case sensitive.

Syntax

Below is the syntax of the PHP String stripos() function −

int stripos ( string $string, string $find, int $start = 0 )

Parameters

Here are the parameters of the stripos() function −

  • $string − (Required) It is used to specify the string to search.

  • $find − (Required) It is used to specify the string to find.

  • $start − (Optional) It is used to specify where to begin the search.

Return Value

The stripos() function returns the position of the first occurrence of a string within another string, or FALSE if no string is found. String places begin at 0, not 1.

PHP Version

First introduced in core PHP 5, the stripos() function continues to function easily in PHP 7, and PHP 8.

Example 1

First we will show you the basic example of the PHP String stripos() function to get the position of the given string.

<?php
   echo stripos("tutorials point","point");
?>

Output

Here is the outcome of the following code −

10

Example 2

In this PHP code we will use the stripos() function and find the position of a case-insensitive substring in the given string.

<?php
   // Mention your string here
   $string = "Hello World!";
   $find = "world";

   // Use stripos() function here
   $position = stripos($string, $find);

   // check the position
   if ($position !== false) {
      echo "The word '$find' is found at position $position.";
   } else {
      echo "The word '$find' is not found.";
   }
?>

Output

This will generate the below output −

The word 'world' is found at position 6.

Example 3

Now the below code start searching from a specific position in the string using the stripos() function.

<?php
   // Mention your string here
   $string = "This is a test. Testing is fun.";
   $find = "test";
   $offset = 10;
   $position = stripos($string, $find, $offset);

   // Print the result
   if ($position !== false) {
      echo "The word '$find' is found at position $position when starting from offset $offset.";
   } else {
      echo "The word '$find' is not found when starting from offset $offset.";
   }
?>

Output

This will create the below output −

The word 'test' is found at position 10 when starting from offset 10.

Example 4

In the following example, we are finding the position of the substring and extract it using stripos() and substr().

<?php
   // Mention the string here
   $string = "Learning PHP is fun and useful.";
   $find = "php";
   $start = stripos($string, $find);

   // Print the result
   if ($start !== false) {
      $extracted = substr($string, $start, strlen($find));
      echo "Found '$find' at start $start. Extracted substring: '$extracted'.";
   } else {
      echo "The word '$find' is not found.";
   }
?>

Output

Following is the output of the above code −

Found 'php' at start 9. Extracted substring: 'PHP'.
