PHOENIX (Oct. 28, 2013) – Cox Communications and Grand Canyon University have entered into a comprehensive partnership that will make Cox7 the exclusive carrier of GCU's inaugural Division I men's basketball season, as well as select other GCU sports programs. The home opener against UC San Diego on Nov. 1 will be the first telecast of the 2013-14 basketball season and will provide viewers anywhere in the world the opportunity to follow the action. Games will air on Cox 7 (HD 1007) and will also be available as a live stream on cox7.com, through the Cox7 mobile application or on Roku. Games will also be broadcast live on GCULopes.com. Additionally, replays will be available across many of these platforms, including Cox7 OnDEMAND, which can be found on channel 1889.
The in-depth coverage will not be limited to game broadcasts, as GCU coach and Phoenix Suns legend "Thunder" Dan Majerle will be featured in a Cox-produced coach's show. "Thunderzone, The Dan Majerle Show" will provide viewers with seven 30-minute episodes scheduled to air throughout the season. Majerle's show will allow viewers exclusive access to GCU players and coaches from a variety of men's and women's sports.
All home game telecasts will be shown with limited commercials, allowing fans to fully experience the thrill of the game and the arena action in their own living rooms. During breaks in the on-court action, viewers will be engaged with more sideline interviews; performances from the Thundering Herd pep band, and cheer and dance teams; halftime entertainment; and interaction with the "Havocs" and "Monsoon" student sections. There will also be a 30-minute pregame show featuring interviews, a preview of the game and the latest around GCU.
"This unique partnership with Cox7 will capture the passion and excitement that defines our basketball program, especially as we enter the first season as a Division I men's basketball program in the Western Athletic Conference," said Brian Mueller, president and CEO of Grand Canyon University. "As one of the premier private Christian universities in the Southwest, GCU attracts students from across the country. Whether in Arizona or half-way across the world, this partnership allows them, their families and our alumni the opportunity to be part of the action and celebrate with us as we begin another season of 'Lopes basketball."
Given GCU's tremendous growth and development, Cox7 will also produce "GCU Today" vignettes that highlight the news from the campus on topics such as community service, the Colangelo School of Sports Business, the Learning Lounge tutoring program for high school students and GCU's new campus at the Eastmark development in Mesa. These informative news segments will air during halftime and across the Cox news and entertainment channel lineup.
"We are thrilled to be the exclusive provider of GCU sports," said Fran Mallace, vice president of Cox media. "This is an exciting extension of our Cox7 sports programming and helps fulfill our goal to offer unique local sports that fans cannot get anywhere else."
Cox Business is also a proud partner with GCU, providing connectivity to the campus and around the housing and dormitory facilities.
"As a team, we are very excited to have Cox7 as our broadcast partner, especially as we enter our first season as a Division I men's basketball program," Majerle said. "Cox7 will give our fans an unprecedented sense of the action on and off the court."
In addition to men's basketball, Cox's multi-faceted coverage of GCU sports will showcase many of the other Antelopes' successful programs. This additional coverage begins with a women's volleyball match against Idaho on Nov. 21, women's basketball vs. Chicago State on Jan. 30, and the baseball home opener against Hofstra on Feb. 21.
Grand Canyon is in its first season of reclassification from NCAA Division II to Division I status. The Antelopes were a perennial power in the Division II ranks, winning the last two Learfield Sports Directors Cups, which is awarded to the best overall athletic institution in the nation for Division II athletics. GCU has numerous national championships in its history, including three for the men's basketball program and four in baseball.
