Early detection saves lives! Bowel cancer detection could soon be easier and more accessible through a simple test. Researchers at Flinders University have partnered with industry experts to develop a quick test to increase early detection of bowel cancer risk – helping to save lives and reduce pressure on hospitals. This is just one of the 78 innovative research projects awarded funding under Round 6 of the National Industry PhD Program. Through the program, PhD students are supported to turn cutting-edge university research into real-world impact and commercial innovation. The Australian Government is making changes in 2026 to help early childhood education and care (ECEC) staff complete mandatory child safety training. The new measure allows providers to close for up to 5 hours annually to support staff in completing mandatory child safety training. Closures are not compulsory. Big news for Australia’s tertiary education system! Legislation to formally create the Australian Tertiary Education Commission has been introduced into Parliament. The ATEC will play a key role in driving lasting reform, ensuring more Australians can access tertiary education. The ATEC will take on responsibility for negotiating mission-based compacts, guiding the system towards national priorities while supporting mission-aligned delivery. Compacts will enable universities to demonstrate achievement of goals through tailored, flexible and collaboratively negotiated agreements. The ATEC will also provide Government with strategic advice to support long-term planning and collaborate with stakeholders to drive tertiary education attainment growth by expanding opportunities for equity cohorts and ensuring the system meets Australia’s skills needs. The Index helps evaluate progress towards conservation targets.
