  • 🏆 ChemCentre, Forensic Science Laboratory and PATHWEST LABORATORY MEDICINE WA, Forensic Biology are the winners of the 2025 Western Australia's Innovators of the Year (WAIOTY) Government Innovators of the Year category! 🏆 Introduced in 2024, the Government Innovators of the Year category recognises Western Australian government entity employees who are innovating, creating novel IP and adding value to public service delivery. This award is sponsored by the Australian Innovation Management Institute (AIMI), who will provide places for up to 5 team members on their AIMI Certified Innovation Catalyst Program. The team created a new forensic capability in Western Australia by using the hair shaft proteome for protein-based human identification. Their work is focused on translating long-established biological concepts into a technology for identification of humans into a usable forensic tool, developing and implementing an internationally accredited forensic process that will provide a robust and objective analysis of single hair shafts, providing a proteomics profile to achieve unique human identification for both evidential and investigative purposes.   • The 10 Year Science and Technology Plan outlines the Western Australian (WA) government’s plan to improve research translation, support technology transfer and maximise opportunities for commercialisation. To diversify our economy and make WA globally competitive, local scientists and technologists need to be supported to turn their ideas into products and services. A workforce skilled in translation and supportive policies are needed to facilitate startups and protect intellectual property. A strong example of this is the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC), which helps advance Australia’s position in international markets by combining market insight with scientific innovation. AEGIC drives value across the supply chain, developing new product technologies and opportunities for Australian grains The WA Government will support scientists and technologists by: ⭐ ensuring funding mechanisms support local ideas and innovations being commercialised; ⭐ improving support for scientists, researchers, technologists and innovators to manage their intellectual property; ⭐ enhancing commercialisation of ideas by building local capabilities and ensuring a supportive policy environment; ⭐ supporting translation of new ideas through piloting programs for new technologies; ⭐ establishing mechanisms for tracking research impact and measuring investment; and ⭐ supporting ongoing reform of local procurement practices to support WA businesses, with a focus on supporting innovative small and medium enterprises and Aboriginal businesses to enter the market.
