A hard week for Calgary tech. The news about Attabotics filing for bankruptcy hit hard. Nearly $200M raised. Big innovation. A ton of smart, committed people trying to do something bold. But another startup that didn’t make it through the scale-up phase. After nearly three decades working in tech startups and scale-ups, I’ve seen the same patterns. Too many times. And every time, they’re avoidable! Here’s what shows up again and again: ❌ Promoting out of loyalty, not readiness. Early employees are everything. But putting them in leadership without support isn’t kind. It’s crushing. ❌ Scaling too early. Splashy growth. Big budgets. Early CAC that looks okay, but churn kills the return. You can’t outspend a leaky bucket. ❌ Ignoring what the data is trying to tell you. When the numbers get uncomfortable, some leaders default to gut feel. That move is rarely as bold as it seems. ❌ Creating echo chambers. When hard questions aren’t welcome, problems hide in plain sight. ❌ Running a scale-up like a startup. Scrappy won’t get you through this phase. Systems will. These aren’t just failure patterns, they’re culture signals. As founders and execs, our job isn’t to be right. It’s to find the truth. Even when it’s messy. Especially when it’s messy. Calgary’s tech sector is growing faster than any other startup ecosystem in Canada. We're bucking global trends and establishing ourselves as a serious innovation hub. This community is resilient. In 2017, Agile Manufacturing expanded its operations to the United States by opening a state-of-the-art facility in Pella, Iowa, allowing it to provide services across North America. The company offers a wide range of services, including laser scanning, reverse engineering, 3D design, and rapid prototyping. It utilizes advanced technologies such as SLA, SLS, MJP, DMP, DLS, MJF, and FDM, enabling the delivery of precise and fast solutions. As a result, Agile Manufacturing can offer same-day deliveries within the Greater Toronto Area, ensuring project timeliness. In January 2025, Agile Manufacturing announced the addition of its ninth large SLA printer from 3D Systems to its machine park, further increasing its production capacity. In total, the company operates a fleet of 45 additive manufacturing machines, including DLP, MJP, FDM, LDM, and SLS devices, with more than half being 3D Systems machines. The company is a leading distributor of 3D Systems in Canada and a key distributor of Markforged. Additionally, in 2024, Agile Manufacturing became the primary distributor of Lynxter SAS silicone printing technology in North America, further enriching its extensive product portfolio.
