🧬 Prevention Research Task Force with 6 Helmholtz Health Centers: Shaping the Future of Global Health 🌍 With the increasing burden of chronic diseases, emerging infections, and environmental challenges like climate change, the need for a paradigm shift from treatment to prevention has never been greater. To meet this demand, #HelmholtzHealth - representing six major health research centers in Germany - has initiated the #PreventionTaskForce, a multidisciplinary think tank aiming to strengthen prevention research and its translation into clinical and public health practice, both nationally and globally. 🔬 Why this matters: - Prevention research focuses on early detection, risk stratification, and interventions before diseases occur - Subclinical disease stages, health disparities, and environmental determinants are still vastly under-researched - Leveraging AI, multi-omics, and digital health tools, the task force will harness big data to uncover actionable health insights - The strategy includes collaborations across disciplines and sectors to bridge the gap between research and implementation 💡 What’s next? The task force has published a #StrategicRoadmap in #NatureMedicine outlining how prevention can become a foundational pillar of sustainable healthcare. From newborn screening to infectious disease modeling using One Health approaches, the initiative sets out to improve health outcomes across the lifespan. I am very excited to report about the kick-off of our new large-scale project "Next Generation AI Computing (GAIn)", joint with my great colleagues Holger Boche (TUM), Stefanie Speidel (National Center for Tumor Diseases Dresden (NCT/UCC)), and Frank Fitzek (Technische Universität Dresden). Although computing is the heart of modern technology in the 21th century and shapes the future of our society, we currently encounter diverse problems with current hardware for AI computing: ⚡ Sustainability / Energy Problem ⚡ Reliability Problem ⚡ Computability Problem ⚡ Problem of EU AI Act Compliance The vision of our project is therefore the 🥬 Development of a comprehensive theory-driven framework for next generation Green AI-systems, which allows optimally application-adapted hard-software combinations for maximal energy-efficiency and trustworthiness! This shall then be used for the following key applications: 📡 Provably reliable AI-based #communication systems which comply with the EU AI Act! ⚕️ Low cost, trustworthy #medical AI-devices for diagnosis and therapy! 🤖 Next generation #robotics with reliable robot brains and life-long learning capabilities! This Bavarian-Saxonian project builds on the Bavarian side on the amazing AI landscape through the Hightech Agenda Bavaria and on the Saxonian side on the Europen leading Silicon Saxony. Several existing initiatives provide an excellent foundation for our project such as 6G-life, Munich Center for Machine Learning, ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig, relAI Konrad Zuse School of Excellence, SECAI School of Embedded Composite AI, and the AI-HUB@LMU. Autonomous AI agents in healthcare: Dresden researchers present regulatory solutions for safe implementation of AI in medicine ⚕️ Artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is rapidly advancing beyond traditional applications. Autonomous AI agents are gaining significant attention for their potential to fundamentally transform medicine. However, researchers at the Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Digital Health at #TUDresden highlight a growing mismatch between the capabilities of autonomous AI agents and existing medical device regulatory frameworks in the US and Europe. In their publication, they propose innovative regulatory approaches to close this gap while ensuring high patient safety standards. Exciting news: Biochemist Georg Winter has been appointed Scientific director Life Sciences at AITHYRA, starting April 2025. AITHYRA is the first institute of its kind in Austria. It will achieve revolutionary advances in biomedicine through the development of AI-supported research approaches.  In February 2025, AITHYRA moved into its first laboratory and office space in the Marxbox at the Vienna BioCenter.
