An attraction inside and out The famous trio of the Bernese Oberland have plenty for everyone. Numerous hiking routes offer panoramic views of the snow-capped peaks, or for a closer view of the famous Eiger North Face, try the Eiger Trail at its foot. For a more relaxing visit, take the Jungfrau railway which snakes for 9 kilometres inside the three mountains up to Europes highest railway station stopping on the way to let you look out over the valleys below.

The most famous peak of all Star of chocolate box and calendar, the mountain with the crooked peak is a symbol of Switzerland. Tip 6. Drinking water.

Guaranteed pure Its no surprise that the water coming out of the taps in Switzerland should be of drinking quality, but there arent many countries where you can drink the water in the city fountains. In general, if it doesnt say you cant, you can. So theres no need to buy bottled water, but if you like it, Switzerland is rich in mineral springs, bottled by local companies. Still or sparkling, its purely a matter of taste which one you choose.

Tip 7. Waterfalls.
Falling from the heights An inspiration to poets and painters, Switzerlands waterfalls are among the highest and biggest in Europe. Goethe and Byron wrote about the Staubbach Falls in the Bernese Oberland, just one of 72 spectacular falls in the Lauterbrunnen valley. In the same valley are the mysterious Trmmelbach Falls, inside the mountain, but open to visitors. The biggest waterfall is on the Rhine; take a boat through swirling waters to its very foot.

A famously crooked bridge Lucernes Chapel Bridge is Europes oldest covered wooden bridge, and one of Switzerlands best-known sights in the German part of the country. Standing guard over the valley High above the Inn valley is the unspoilt village of Guarda, with streets of typical tall Engadin houses, their facades decorated with sgraffito patterns, pictures and inscriptions. In the local Romansh language, its name indicates it is a vantage point with views of the whole valley. And its the setting for the charming childrens story of Schellenursli, a little boy bravely determined to find a bell for the Chalandamarz festival.

A grape-growing heritage The Lavaux vineyards are one of Switzerlands UNESCO World Heritage sites. Planted by mediaeval monks, they cover 800 hectares of south-facing slopes overlooking Lake Geneva in the French part of Switzerland. Take a boat to get a spectacular view from the water, or ramble through the sundrenched terraces and unspoilt villages, looking over the lake to the mountains on the other side. Darkness and light at carnival The best-known of Switzerlands carnivals is Basels Fasnacht, its three most beautiful days. At 4 a.m. on the first Monday of Lent, all the lights go off for the Morgestraich when the costumed and masked participants set off to the sound of fife and drum, the only light coming from their lanterns with their satirical decorations. For 72 hours the streets are alive with the sound of carnival music fun for locals and visitors alike.

Where burly men bite the dust Lovers of traditional folklore are well served at the annual Brnigschwinget Swiss wrestling match, where they can see not only the best wrestlers of Central Switzerland, but also admire typically Swiss skills such as yodelling, alphorn playing, and flag throwing. Enjoying the ups and downs Mountain bikers are spoilt for choice in Switzerland, with routes classed from easy to extreme, steep climbs or long-distance tours. Take the southern canton of Ticino: if you like a real challenge, try Monte Tamaro, in the track of world champions. For something differently rewarding, there are the rolling hills and pretty villages of Mendrisiotto, or the little-known Capriasca region, with its chestnut forests and views of Lake Lugano.

A long tradition continues Switzerland has always attracted winter sports enthusiasts. The chic resort of St. Moritz in the Engadin has twice hosted the winter Olympics, it has 350 kilometres (217 miles) of ski pistes, and is home to the Cresta run skeleton track and the oldest bob run in the world still built every year of natural ice. The famous White Turf horse races are held on the frozen lake, and theres a network of winter trails for crosscountry skiers and walkers.

Where the stars shine Of all the summer music festivals, the Montreux Jazz Festival is one of the most prestigious. Since it started in 1967, it has drawn names like Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Quincy Jones, Eric Clapton, Sting, Aretha Franklin and many, many more. But it gives a stage to emerging artists as well. From its jazz beginnings, it has expanded to feature music of all kinds. And anyone whos been will tell you: the atmosphere is something really special.

Tip 26. Street Parade.

A feast of music and colour If you think the Swiss never let their hair down, think again! Hundreds of thousands of people descend annually on Zrich on a mid-August Saturday for the crazy, colourful Street Parade. Brightly decorated Love Mobiles drive slowly through the crowds, each playing its own type of electronic music, with leading DJs and live acts. And if thats not enough, there is partying in and around Zrich from Friday night to the early hours of Monday.

Tip 27. The Geneva Festival.

Fun by the lake Fabulous music and breathtaking fireworks on the edge of the lake thats the annual Festival in Switzerlands most cosmopolitan city, Geneva. From rock to reggae, from country to classical, theres something for you whatever your taste. And talking of taste: theres a chance to sample some fine local products in the espace terroir. A pre-festival fortnight at the end of July runs into the 10-day festival proper: not to be missed.

A must for art lovers The biggest art fair in the world is held in Basel in June each year. Art Basel is a leading showcase for contemporary art, with nearly 300 top international galleries showing recognised masters and up-and-coming stars working in every branch of the arts from painting, drawing and sculpture to installations, photography and video. For over 40 years it has been attracting collectors, dealers, artists, curators and art lovers in general.

Staying in hot water Switzerland has a long-standing spa tradition, starting 2,000 years ago with the Romans who built several baths. One was in Baden, whose name even means bath; its sulphurous thermal springs bubble out at a temperature of 47C (117F). Tip 31. Paracelsus.

A cure in a romantic setting The Pffers hot springs in the Tamina gorge near Bad Ragaz have been known since the 13th century, but it was only after 1535, when the eminent doctor Paracelsus wrote about its virtues, that the sick started coming from far and near, hoping for a cure. The old spa in the romantic gorge is open to visitors, but those wanting to benefit from its curative waters can now stay in luxurious hotels with extensive grounds in Bad Ragaz itself.

Getting to grips with history Switzerland is a land of museums of every sort, often housed in eyecatching buildings. The National Museum in the heart of Zrich looks like a mediaeval castle. Its recently refurbished main exhibition gives an exciting overview of Switzerlands complicated cultural history. Spoilt for choice Shopping is a special experience in the Swiss capital Bern. Whether or not you actually want to buy anything, you can feast your eyes on items ranging from antiques to souvenirs, from elegant clothes to tempting chocolate, in the 6 kilometres of arcades known as Lauben and if its raining, you wont get wet! The windows are a treat in themselves: the Bernese even have a special word, lubele, for wandering around the arcades.

Southern relaxation Lugano, in sunny Ticino, lies in a bay on the lake of the same name, surrounded by mountains. Thanks to its mild climate, camellias and magnolias flourish in its many parks. A town big enough to cater for every need, but never overwhelming.
