Did you know
that Lake Geneva is the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe? Switzerland has 6% of Europes stock of fresh water. The Rhine, Rhone and Inn all take their source here, although their waters flow into three seas: the North Sea, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. that you are not allowed to smoke in Swiss trains? Anti-smoking campaigns are gaining ground. The Swiss Federal Railway banned smoking in all their trains in December 2005, and in March 2006 Ticino became the first canton to ban smoking in public places. As of May 2010 this law is effectual in whole Switzerland. ... that the Swiss are world champions in recycling? The Swiss attach a lot of importance to recycling. Ordinary citizens are encouraged to recycle as much as possible. In many cantons householders pay a tax according to the volume of rubbish they put out for the dustmen to collect. This acts as an incentive to dispose of anything recyclable at recycling points for which they do not have to pay.
why the official abbreviation for Switzerland is CH? For historical reasons, Switzerlands official name is still the Swiss Confederation. In Latin this is Confoederatio Helvetica, from which the countys international abbreviation, CH, is derived. However, this is in fact a misnomer: a confederation is an alliance of autonomous entitles. Since 1848 Switzerland has been a federation: a grouping of entitles with a central authority.

that landlocked Switzerland has a merchant navy? Four per cent of Switzerlands Gross Domestic Product comes from the shipping and logistics sector. It employs some 130,000 people in Switzerland alone. ... that you are never more than 20 kilometres (13 miles) away from a lake or a river and that 14% of Switzerland is protected as nature or national parks? In Switzerland you will see natures most fascinating aspects: 1,484 lakes, 1 National Park, 16 natural parks and 5 UNESCO World Heritage sites offer a wide range of natural variety. that more Nobel prizes have been awarded to the Swiss than to citizens of any other country? Since 1901 no less than 24 Swiss citizens have received the highest academic award. In proportion to the population, no other country has won more Nobel prizes. that Switzerland is home to Europes oldest vegetarian restaurant? Haus Hiltl, which opened in 1898, is one of the most popular eateries in Zrich, and is listed in every tourist guide to the city.
that the Swiss are a nation of rail travellers? People in Switzerland travel more kilometres by train than their counterparts anywhere else in the world. On average, each person travels approximately 2,103 kilometres (1,306 miles) 127 kilometres/year (79 miles) more than those in Japan, the nearest rival. that the highest vineyard in Europe is in Switzerland? The Valais village of Visperterminen has long been proud of being home to the highest vineyard in Europe, which extends from 660 metres to 1,150 metres above sea level. More than ten years ago, many plots were no longer cultivated; but following renovation of the decaying dry-stone walls and the founding of the Heida Guild by Pirmin Heinzmann, cellarer of the St. Jodern winery in Visperterminen, the vineyards are flourishing once again, producing Heida white wine known as the Pearl of alpine wines. that Switzerland has four official national languages? Despite its relatively small size, Switzerland is home to four official national languages: German (spoken by 64% of the population), French (20%), Italian (7%) and Romansh (1%). English is also widely spoken.

Tip 3. The Matterhorn.
The most famous peak of all Star of chocolate box and calendar, the mountain with the crooked peak is a symbol of Switzerland. A challenge to mountaineers, but less energetic visitors can enjoy its tranquil beauty from afar. You know it from photos, but can you leave without seeing the real thing? Tip 6. Drinking water.
Guaranteed pure Its no surprise that the water coming out of the taps in Switzerland should be of drinking quality, but there arent many countries where you can drink the water in the city fountains. Tip 7. Waterfalls.
Falling from the heights An inspiration to poets and painters, Switzerlands waterfalls are among the highest and biggest in Europe. Goethe and Byron wrote about the Staubbach Falls in the Bernese Oberland, just one of 72 spectacular falls in the Lauterbrunnen valley.
