Modal Verben
What are Modal Verbs?
Modal verbs are a special group of
verbs.
They usually never occur alone in a
sentence but with a main verb.
Without the main verb the sentence
mostly doesn't make sense.
The 7 modal verbs are:
dürfen (may / be allowed to)
können (can / be able to)
mögen (like)
müssen (must / have to)
sollen (should / be supposed to)
wollen (want)
möchten (would like to)

What's the word order for sentences
with modal verbs?
►put the modal verb after the
subject
►put the main verb at the very end
of the sentence
Aussagesatz :
Sub/PP + Modal Verb+ Rest of the Sentence + Main Verb in infinitive.
W- Frage Satz :
W- Frage + Modal Verb + Sub/PP + Rest of the Sentence + Main Verb
in Infinitive.
Fragesatz:
Modal Verb + Sub/PP + Rest of the Sentence + Main Verb in Infinitive.
Beispiele
Ich kann Deutsch sprechen. (I can speak German.)
Du kannst Deutsch sprechen. (You can speak German.)
Er/sie/es kann Deutsch sprechen. (He/she/It can speak
German.)
Wir können Deutsch sprechen. (We can speak German.)
Ihr könnt Deutsch sprechen. (You can speak German.)
Sie können Deutsch sprechen. (They can speak German.)

►Cathy kann ein wenig Deutsch sprechen. (Cathy can
speak a little German.)
►Ich möchte dich am Samstag im Cafe treffen. (I’d like to

What happens when the sentence
consists a modal verb and a separable
main verb?
In sentences with modal verbs,
separable verbs AREN'T splitted up and
remain as one unit and go at the very
end of the sentence.

►Ich kann ihn abholen. (I can pick him up.)
►Ich möchte oft fernsehen. (I would like to often
watch TV.)
►Ich muss das Auto zu ihrem Platz vorbeibringen. (I
must drop the car at your place)
