Accessibility, and Why You Should Care

OK, first off, let’s acknowledge that “Accessibility” is a bit of an overloaded term, but we’ll get to that in a bit. First off, let’s look at a tangible example —  How usable is your product for somebody who has one arm ? So fine, fine, you look at the demographics, and convince yourself that the total number of one-armed people who use your system is … small. Great, so —  What about people who have lost the use of one arm ? Oh, right, thats quite a few more people. And it can happen due to age, accidents, disease, etc. And, yet again, you convince yourself that this doesn’t really apply to you. So, next one —  What about people who have   temporarily   lost the use of one arm? Who might I be talking about? Oh, so many examples • You’re carrying a cup of coffee • You’re using the mobile UI with one hand, and are holding on to a bus-strap with another • You’re carrying a baby • You broke your arm etc. You get the point, right? Blackberry OS 7 is *ridiculously* secure - Does anyone care?

Theres a new Trend Micro (the security folks) study out ( which I can't get my hands on. Sigh .) which sez. that the BB 7 OS has "corporate grade security and manageability". Which, I believe, is just about enough to get you a cup of coffee, if you happen to have an extra $3.50 lying around that is. Seriously, who even cares about this stuff any more?  I mean, of course people care about security, but its not really the primary thing, is it? Pretty much everyone I know has an iPhone or an Android thingy.  The choice is never about which one is more secure, its pretty much a Mac vs. PC type of religious thing, with the PC replaced with Android. Sometimes, sometimes , they also haul around a company provided BB, which kinda, sorta, vaguely, gets used, but even thats pretty much fading.  I suspect a huge chunk of these are long-term contracts that the company has signed, which is almost certainly not a good sign for RIM.
