Kubernetes support on AWS is still poor compared to GCE support. K8S docs focus on building non-production quality clusters yet there seems to be a strong desire to have people use K8S in production. Very difficult to figure out how to run K8S in a production quality setup.

End-to-end solutions around deploying & managing containers are still very immature. In the enterprise, the holy grail would be a not-too-opinionated CaaS that supports both Linux & Windows. Obviously, we're are a ways from that. But maybe 2016 gets a lot closer to it.

Some software requires a lot from underlying system and breaks within simple containers, requiring really fat images with full distros. To clarify, lots of software doesn't play nice, but it's not the fault of containers.

- easy log aggregation, service discovery, monitoring
- knowing what will be the standard ( or which systems will survive)
- development is mostly done on osx machines - docker machine is good, but still not a good enough solution (native container support on osx?)
- who maintains the cluster management (dedicated ops -> no more, devs with ops skills -> mature managed solutions like ECS are needed but less propriatery )
- build pipeline standard - something like a combination of wercker and dockerhub registry - be able to define own steps for tests, integration tests, deployments, smoke tests, all containerized (but different containers for each) - jenkins is a PITA
- more scratch like image for JVM (right now i can only use GO - fine for me , not for the company :( )

Some simpler setup of things like docker hub, jenkins, grafana+prometheus, kibana+es in a K8s cluster would be nice. Also, either a Windows setup for K8s/docker development, or a reliable NFS client that doesn't bug out twice a day (winnfsd).

Lack of maturity in terms of tools and solutions. Bit complex to design, develop and operate. Might be good for develops to play around but running production works loads with mission critical apps with integration with enterprise components is challenge. More work is needed at network, storage and integration layer. Logs, monitoring and troubleshooting is very complex. Think about running mission critical apps with HA and SLA is very critical.

Building small containers is hard. Very little distro support, most distros don't separate the files needed to build ({yum, apt} install ...) and runtime files (the recursive output of ldd, and some /etc config files).

Sandstorm.io's "spk dev" command is a nice way to make small images (it tracks system calls that use files), but that technique can't be done apriori to a build.

Dockerfiles don't have "mixins". I can't selectively choose to make a Franken'Image from the top most layers of two (or more) docker images.
My workaround is to "docker import" tarfiles after extracting the layers that I want. (e.g. "the glibc layer" and "my app layer", but not the "ubuntu" layer.)

I want to replace task driven vms with containers. Example: I want a "mail server" container but how to run dovecot and postfix at the same time? Also, I want containers to have their own "public" ip address and/or mdns entries, ie: hostname mail.local.

I'm not a docker expert as is evident.

I also want to see distro level Dockerfiles. ie: yum install dovecot.docker or something like that.
