The role of trust and distrust in risk and safety communication
Mehta, Amisha, Tyquin, Ellen, & Bradley, Lisa (2024) The role of trust and distrust in risk and safety communication. In Sellnow, Timothy L. & Sellnow, Deanna D. (Eds.) Communicating Risk and Safety. De Gruyter Mouton, Berlin, Germany, pp. 529-550.
Description
Risk and safety communication needs to be designed around the crucial elements of trust and distrust. During events, information and disinformation can come from a variety of sources, using multiple channels, and with a variety of speeds. There can be both trust and distrust in some or all of these components. Understanding how trust and distrust occurs allows for the development of the best communication strategy. This chapter discusses trust and the under-examined concept of distrust in the context of risk communication. Relevant theories and models related to trust and distrust are described, demonstrating their application for research and practice. A case study is provided, examining trust in flood warnings in order to suggest ways that communication can be designed to maximize trust. It concludes with a discussion of changing landscapes for risk and safety communication, including suggested responses to related challenges and opportunities.

Citation counts are sourced monthly from Scopus and Web of Science® citation databases.
These databases contain citations from different subsets of available publications and different time periods and thus the citation count from each is usually different. Some works are not in either database and no count is displayed. Scopus includes citations from articles published in 1996 onwards, and Web of Science® generally from 1980 onwards.
Citations counts from the Google Scholar™ indexing service can be viewed at the linked Google Scholar™ search.
