Las expresiones there is y there are se utilizan para indicar que un objeto o una persona se encuentran en un sitio especificado. "There is" y "There are" quieren decir "Hay" en espaol. "There is" es singular y "There are" es plural. Utilizamos there is cuando el sujeto es: Un sustantivo contable singular: There is an apple in the basket. Los sustantivos incontables pueden llevar cuantificadores como some, any, much, a lot of etc. Utilizamos there are cuando el sujeto es: En afirmativo

El negativo es "There is not" y "There are not" y sus contracciones. La forma negativa de las expresiones existenciales there is / there are se construye con la partcula negativa not: There isnt any apple in the basket. para decir que no hay ningn o ninguna se utiliza el cuantificador any. En las oraciones negativas hay que tener en cuenta que se usar ' any ' y no ' some '. There arent twenty children in the class. There is not a book. - There isn't a book. There are not books. - There aren't books.

Utilizamos la forma completa en las respuestas afirmativas, mientras que utilizamos la forma contrada en las respuestas negativas. Para dar respuestas cortas debemos utilizar la forma correspondiente del verbo 'to be', respetando si es singular o plural. Is there a woman in the park?
