Table 5.6 Waveform analysis current verses voltage primary (non-limited)
Channel 1.
The current may be drawn momentarily into a negative value as the ignition coil
discharges.
Channel 2.
This shows the peak voltage created in the primary circuit as the ignition coll discharges
and creates a spark.
Channel 2. '
This is the spark line or burn time and gives an indication of the duration of the spark.
Channel 2.
This shows the coil oscillations as the induced voltage dissipates (like the bouncing of an
un-damped suspension spring) before settling out at battery voltage.
The amount of oscillations here gives a good guide to the condition of the ignition coil ang
‘should show 4 to 5 peaks (upper and lower). If there are less oscillations than expected,
this can give you an indication that the coil should be replaced.

n some distributorless ignition systems, the principle of ‘wasted spark’ is used,
Intis design, one ignition colli used to operate a pair of companion cylinders on an engine. (Companion cylinders
are those where the pistons reach top dead centre TDC at the same time). As one of the cylinders will be on ite
compression stroke, the spark provided wil ignite the mixture and initiate the power stroke; its companion cylinder
wil@ on the exhaust stroke, meaning this spark will be wasted.
‘The main reason a wasted spark system is used by some manufacturers is that it reduces the complexity of the
‘aiton circuit and its operation; you don't have to choose which of the companion cylinders needs the spark, you
lust have to know when. This also reduces the complexity of engine management programming by half.
As both ends of the secondary coil are attached to a spark plug, they form a circuit through the metal of the cylinder
head, When fired, voltage is induced in the secondary winding and current flows in the circuit in one direction,
causing one plug to operate with a positive spark and the other with a negative spark, This design may cause
‘even erosion of the spark plug electrodes, but has no effect on the ignition of the mixture.Automotive Ignitio
