This issue is for discussion of the use case “View a map in augmented reality”, its examples & list of required capabilities.


A user wants to view a map in AR.

Interesting use case. Not likely to be part of the minimum viable web map feature set, but there are definitely apps out there doing this & as you note, there is lots of existing work in web standards about getting AR/XR integrated into web APIs.

I think a key feature of even a minimum viable mapping component will bring geo location of web content into existence. As such, AR may be provided for a given real world location by any Web site, which would be cool.

There is a repo in the Immersive Web CG repo that talks about geo-alignment, by which I think they mean enabling linking Web sites' XR with the real world as reported by a phone's sensors. People from the GeoPose community dropped by there. The activity seems to have died out mind you.
