Currently, in 3.12 , we have:

Success Criterion - Structured Data (Machine-testable)

Embed Microdata, Structured Data (Schema), or Microformats within your pages.

This could be read as that the more microdata, the merrier… maybe we can clarify this to add something about 'where appropriate'?

Maybe even go as far as requiring 'widely used' to mitigate potential overuse?

What about:

Success Criterion - Structured Data

Use Microdata, Structured Data (Schema), or Microformats to content for which a widely used structured data format exists.

Agreed. The update for the Success Criteria has been deployed with my latest batch pull request.
