ICF: Controversial Change to the Core Coaching Competencies ICF recently released an update to the Core Coaching Competencies model. One of the most controversial changes seems to be including “sharing knowledge” in the description of the coach’s behaviours in Evoking Awareness Competency (point 7.11). ICF guidelines to interpretation of that change emphasise ‘sharing without attachment’ to stay in line with the ICF Coaching Definition and Mindset. Nevertheless, the change may also offer a permission to ‘rescue the client’ rather than ‘trusting the client being the expert on their life, naturally creative resourceful and whole’. ‘Being vulnerable’ and ‘not knowing’ as the best way to hold the space for the client for new awareness to emerge, might become populated by the coach’s attention to finding the solution – and therefore partially away from being present and curious of the subtle changes in the client and the energy in the coaching process. I believe the conversations on this topic are important therefore I invite the voices of coaches and people who have experienced coaching. An Eclectic Versus an Integrated Approach in Coaching I have had some really interesting comments from coaches of late about this chapter in Reflective Practice for Coaches so I thought I would expand the conversation. Eclectic means an approach that is composed of elements drawn from various sources. The eclectic coach draws on a range of theories and techniques with no theoretical concepts underpinning the practice, with the choice based on the individual’s belief that the combination is effective. The practice and experience of the coach helps to identify the pathways the individual adopts. At the extreme, new coaches or therapists can fall into syncretism, a random combination without cohesion that can be difficult for the client to understand. By contrast, integrative means to form, coordinate, or blend into a functioning or unified whole. Cooper and McLeod (2007) suggest that the underlying principle of an integrative approach is that client problems have multiple causes and so using only one therapeutic method is unlikely to be successful. Nothing is appropriate in all situations as different clients are helped by different processes at different times. In practice integrative coaching means in any one session the coach will primarily adhere to one coaching model but supplement this with the use of a small number of other therapeutic techniques as needed. This aims to produce a coherent, clear and unified approach to coaching which can be easily explained to the client, if needed. Each of the integrative approaches used needs to independently provide a helpful account of psychological functioning and behaviour with the combination enhancing effectiveness. This approach is supported by research that suggests that a diverse range of therapeutic methods can be beneficial to clients, even when their underlying models or theories are not directly compatible provided the coach can understand and explain the approach to the client if this is needed (Cooper, 2008).
