Ahmedabad may not be claiming the GCC crown - but it is clearly in the front race. In the #GCC playbook, Tier-II cities are no longer on the sidelines. And the Ahmedabad - Gandhinagar - GIFT City belt is scripting its own chapter. A recent Zinnov Report (Aug 2024) ranks Ahmedabad as the #1 Tier-II city in India for GCC ecosystem favourability - driven by a combination of policy, infrastructure, and talent readiness. Based in Ahmedabad myself, here is my assessment of what is playing out: ▶️ 35+ Global Capability Centres (GCCs) & GICs ▶️ 25+ IT and business service providers ▶️ 60+ startups driving innovation (this number may be much higher - but mentioning what the Zinnov report says) ▶️ 850+ IFSC units with 25% YoY growth ▶️ New global entrants: Infineon Technologies, Technip Energies, TELUS Digital ▶️ Established players: IBM, Capgemini, Google, Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, S&P Global, However, the question is what is the reason behind this momentum? - 10-year tax holiday (Sec 80LA) - exclusive to GIFT IFSC - Gujarat’s policy stack: subsidies, PF reimbursements for women, reduced duties - World-class infra + cost advantage - Access to talent, safety, and better quality of life Ahmedabad is not trying to outpace Bengaluru or Hyderabad. But it’s making a very strong case as India’s next sustainable #GCC base - especially for firms valuing cost efficiency, #infrastructure, and long-term value. And for those building in professional services, IT, finance, or back-office innovation - the window is open. To sum it up, I would say: "Ahmedabad is not a Tier-I metro. 🚀 Consumption in India is likely to get a USD30-40bn annual booster shot over the next couple of years aided by the 8th pay commission hikes, which will benefit from FY27 onwards, a reduced personal tax rate from FY26 onwards, and savings from reduced interest rates. This is significant as, based on our calculations, total discretionary spend in the country is around USD250bn each year, which includes spending on the likes of automobiles, consumer goods, dining out and electronics. Although it is difficult to determine which categories will benefit the most, on an average, we think consumption should improve as a result of higher disposable income. This piece resonated, especially on the #funding front. The capital constraint for #biotechs in India is peculiar as private investors are still warming up to the domain wherein traditional unit economics don't hold up while start-up valuation and revenue are often uncoupled. IXP NXT QST FWD

The world of finance thrives on complexity, and few corners embody this more than the realm of hedge funds. The Indian hedge fund industry, up until now, was accessible only via AIFs (Alternative Investment Fund) and due to the minimum threshold of AIFs, was accessible only to investors with deeper pockets. That is set to change. With the regulator having relaxed the norms, a much larger base of investors can now access these funds. An all-together new category of funds has been created – SIFs (Specialized Investment Fund), with a much lower threshold. Two asset management companies (AMCs) have already launched their schemes, and many more are in process. I would, however, hesitate to invest in these funds (either through AIFs or SIFs) without a thorough understanding of their risk-return trade-offs. They employ complex strategies which make them fundamentally different from the conventional equity and debt funds. Having said that, these funds can add an important dimension to your investment portfolio. And even more so, in a changing world order, where financial market volatility is expected to increase. Hence, I decided to put this detailed note together.
