On 1 September 2025, the National Cyber and AI Center (#NCAIC), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (#MeitY), released India’s first #AIGovernance Framework (2025–26). The Framework calls on companies and Boards to act decisively. It expects them to: (a) Classify every AI system into prohibited, high-risk, medium-risk, or low-risk categories, and apply safeguards that match the risk level. (b) Build lifecycle compliance, ensuring privacy, security, and fairness are embedded from the design stage through to deployment. (c) Stay aligned with existing Indian law and regulatory obligations. This includes the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act), which protects the privacy of individuals’ personal data; the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), which issues mandatory reporting timelines for cybersecurity incidents; the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which regulates the financial sector; the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), which oversees capital markets; and the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), which supervises the insurance sector. Together, these agencies ensure AI adoption remains safe, lawful, and trustworthy across critical industries.
