During my individual contributor days at Symantec, I got the opportunity to converse with my then Sr. Director Sourav. I was frustrated with the time it was taking me to do certain task and Sourav was nonchalant at the mention of it - simply saying "It's ok, as long as you are putting your best effort everyday." The impatient engineer in me blurted - "I think some engineers are just gifted and they can do complex things quickly. How can I become such an expert?" And in the moment, Sourav shared a very important lesson - "The right question is not 'how' but 'when'. When you have invested 10,000 hours doing something - you'll be an expert at it." I pushed back - "Isn't it just a random high number to put me in place?" He didn't move and chuckled - "Abhinav, you're smart - but you won't remain there without focused learning." And then he suggested to go over a book - Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. Outliers is an excellent book to provide guidance irrespective of your background or domain or career-path. It shares, few irrefutable statistical data-points towards - a. Invest 10,000 hours in a domain to have a shot at gaining expertise. b. Accumulative advantage (or compounding effect) is true for behaviors (not just interest) c. Family, culture, and friendships - each play a role in an individual's success. Nobody ever makes-it alone. d. Work ethic, discipline, and longer hours - are required to solve problems of higher order complexities The conclusion - "[success] is not exceptional or mysterious. It is grounded in a web of advantages and inheritances, some deserved, some not, some earned, some just plain lucky" I would like to highlight few additional points. 1. Leaders can have deep impact on team members, should they choose to listen. 2. There is a reason leaders like to read. It helps in thinking clearly, it allows to soak knowledge as sponge. Helps in understanding different view-points on the same set of problems from various angles - further results in a unique perspective for solutions. 3. Quality and quantity both matter on your brain-shelf to produce simple yet innovative ideas, concepts, or products. Reading voraciously, is the most practical path to enrich your brain-shelf. What are you reading today - to improve your brain-shelf? PS- I sent a mail to Malcolm Gladwell after reading the book with few queries and he was gracious enough to respond to a nobody engineer.
